The classwas known for having a large number of returning World War II U.S.veterans. Most of the members of the Class of ’49 went on to becomedistinguished educators. This scholarship perpetuates the long-termcommitment of the class members to their alma mater and present daystudents. To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must have aminimum SAT total score of 1000 (critical reasoning and mathematicscomponent) or ACT composite score of 22, be a prospective educationmajor, graduate in the upper two fifths of high school class, and be adescendant of a <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> Alumnus. Students who feel theymeet the academic criteria need to submit a letter indicating they are adescendent of an alumnus with name and graduation year of the alumnusto the scholarship administrator in the Admissions Office, <strong>Clarion</strong><strong>University</strong>. As an integral part of <strong>Clarion</strong>’s rich tradition ofexcellence, members desire that this award will be an annual scholarshipawarded to a <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> student. All Education applicants foradmission who have at least a 3.0 grade point average will automaticallybe considered for this award. Student must also show financial need asindicated by FAFSA. The scholarship is renewable as long as the studentmaintains a cumulative 3.0 grade point average at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>and remains an Education major.<strong>Clarion</strong> County Chapter of the PA Association of School RetireesScholarship: One scholarship is awarded each year. Candidate must havegraduated from a <strong>Clarion</strong> County high school or have been a residentof <strong>Clarion</strong> County at the time of high school graduation. Application ismade in the spring to the Education Department chair at 814-393-2404.Selection is based on academic record, contribution to department anduniversity, participation in extracurricular activities, and leadership skills.Letters of recommendation are required.Robert & Diana Coury Scholarship: This scholarship was establishedto honor Robert, Class of 1952 and Diana Coury who were strongadvocates of <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Candidates must be current <strong>Clarion</strong> universitystudents in the College of Education who have completed at leastfour semesters of academic work by the end of May. Candidates mustshow promise of outstanding service to the profession by performancein the classroom as well as in professional development experienceoutside the classroom. Student must have at least a 3.4 cumulative QPACandidates will write a letter of application for the scholarship indicatingtheir strength of eligibility according to the criteria listed above. Acandidate will also include his/her thoughts on the contributions theyplan to make to the teaching profession. Deadline is April 1. ContactDean of Education & Human Services for further information.Eric Flath Scholarship: This scholarship will be established fromthe estate of <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> graduates Robert ’50 and Marilyn ’67Flath to honor their son Eric and is to provide education assistance for<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> students pursuing a career in the fields of specialeducation or social service. Applicants must be permanent residents inthe Keystone or Oil City school districts and the scholarship will alternateeach year between the two schools. The scholarship will be availableup to four years dependent upon the recipient maintaining a 3.0 QPA inhis/her major and demonstrating successful progress toward completionof a degree. Students who receive athletic scholarship are not eligible.The Grejda Education Scholarship Endowment: This scholarshipendowment was created by Dr. Gail F. Grejda in honor of her husbandEd, <strong>Clarion</strong> alum (’57) and professor emeritus of English (’61-’96); andtheir family’s longtime dedication to outstanding classroom teaching. Thepurpose of the scholarship is to encourage students who show promise inthe field of education, through having demonstrated excellence in theirclassroom experiences.Wilma Best Logue Education Scholarship: A scholarship isawarded each year to an incoming freshman planning to major inEducation at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. To be considered, candidates must beseniors at Keystone High School. Knox, Pennsylvania. Student recordsare reviewed for this award via their admission material.Florence McLaughlin Scholarship: Established by Mr. David C.Smith, Class of 1964, in honor of Miss Florence McLaughlin who wasan English teacher and role model for many students. The scholarship isintended for a Mount Lebanon High School student planning to attend<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. First preference is an incoming English major fromMount Lebanon. Second preference is a secondary education major. Thirdpreference is an elementary education major. For consideration, incomingfreshmen need a minimum SAT total score of 1150 (critical reasoning andmath components) and should graduate in the top 15 percent of seniorclass. Student records are automatically reviewed for this award via theiradmission materials. Special consideration of those students acceptedinto <strong>Clarion</strong>’s Honors Program.Elementary EducationLaura Taylor Booth Presidential Scholarship Endowment forIncoming Freshman: Created by Mrs. Oleta B. Amsler in honor of hermother, Laura Taylor Booth with first preference to support elementaryeducation majors from Elk County. Secondary consideration will begiven to elementary education majors from western Pennsylvania.Criteria includes at least a score of 1250 (critical reasoning and mathcomponents) on the SATs and top 5 percent of high school senior class.This renewable award is offered once every four years. When available,students are automatically considered for this award when they submittheir application for admission.Margaret Elder and Truman W. Weiser Scholarship Fund: Thisscholarship was established by a bequest for the estate of Margaret E.Weiser. The purpose of the award is to fund scholarships for graduatesof <strong>Clarion</strong>-Limestone School District, Strattanville, Pa., who major inelementary education at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Marlin and Cleva Hartman Scholarship: Established by MarlinHartman, Class of 1959, and Cleva Haight Hartman, Class of 1959,for an incoming freshman who is a son or daughter of a United Statesveteran. Financial need is considered. First preference is for a math ormath education major. Second preference is for an elementary educationmajor. Strength of academic credential is also influential. Scholarshipawarded by March 1.Parma Dixon Mooney Scholarship: Awarded each year to a freshmanor transfer majoring in elementary education.
