<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania 211Introductory Biology and PHSC 111 Physical ScienceChemistry or CHEM 153 General Chemistry I andCHEM 163 General Chemistry I Lab. These sciencecourses are pre-requisite courses for admission intothe A.S.N. program. (College credits for the sciencesare acceptable only if they have been earned within10 years of admission and received from a properlyaccredited institution.)2. To satisfy the English requirement, an individualstudent must take ENG 111 Writing II.3. To satisfy the mathematics requirement, an individualwill need to take MATH 050 Basic Algebra. Thecourse is pre-requisite to both the nursing programand the math course required to meet the GeneralEducation requirements for an associate degreefrom <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. (A placement test may benecessary for determining the necessary math course.Based on the results of this exam, the individual willeither be exempt from MATH 050 or be required totake the course. (College credits for mathematicsare acceptable only if they have been earned within10 years of admission from a properly accreditedinstitution.)Admission Policies for EntranceApplicants who satisfy all high school criteria willbe considered for admission into the A.S.N. program.Admission to the program is very competitive. Admissionprocedures for the A.S.N. program include:1. having been accepted by <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. (See<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> Admissions requirements on page15 in the catalog);2. a QPA of 2.0 in high school and/or college;3. completion of pre-requisite courses (biology, math,and chemistry) with a grade of C or better;4. requesting admission into the A.S.N. program. (Fornew students, this requires a letter of applicationwhich must be received in the nursing office no laterthan December 15. For currently enrolled <strong>Clarion</strong>students, a change of status form must be completedand received in the nursing office no later thanDecember 15;5. having official transcripts from high school and allcolleges or universities previously attended sent tothe admissions office at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>, 840 WoodStreet, <strong>Clarion</strong>, PA 16214;6. having taken or scheduled the National League forNursing (NLN) Pre-Entrance Examination (LPNs andapplicants with bachelor’s degrees are exempt fromthis testing);7. submitting an essay of 250 words or less whichaddresses the applicant’s interest in nursing (must bereceived in the nursing office no later than December15).Please be aware, the Department of Nursing’s admissionscommittee will consider for Fall admission only thoseapplicants who have met the above criteria. Note also theuniversity designation as “pre-nursing” does not guaranteeacceptance into the ASN program.Articulation PolicyLicensed practical nurses who have graduated withinthree years from an NLNAC-accredited nursing program areeligible for direct articulation into <strong>Clarion</strong>’s A.S.N. program.Individuals who have graduated between three and 10years prior to application must have 1,000 hours of nursingpractice within the last three years for direct articulation.Special arrangements are made for individuals who have:(1) graduated from a non-NLNAC accredited nursingprogram;(2) practiced nursing less than 1,000 hours within threeyears of application;(3) graduated from a NLNAC-accredited nursingprogram more than 10 years ago.Associate of Science in Nursing DegreeProgram CurriculumAlthough the Associate of Science in Nursing is designedto be completed in two academic years, part-time studyis available.
