172.General features and activities of career advisingservices: Case study from the United KingdomBrian StainesHead of Guidance, Careers Advisory Service, University of Bristol, United KingdomThe following text gives a brief view of the operation of university careers services in the UnitedKingdom. It is intended to give a flavour of the main types of activities that careers servicesundertake, as well as providing some possible discussion points for other universities thinking ofstarting or developing their own careers services. It may be of particular relevance in the Croatiancontext as it deals with many of the core activities of UK careers services.2.1. Background: Administrative features of university careers servicesCareers services exist in virtually all universities within the UK. Regarding the location of these serviceswithin the administrative structure of the universities, models can vary from university to university:some careers services are integrated fully into Student Services, whereas in others (as is thecase with Bristol) they are stand-alone services (established as a separate administrative unit).In terms of the size of these offices (i.e. human resources necessary to run careers services),numbers of staff can also vary between smaller services which may employ 3 or 4 staff, to largerservices who can employ in excess of 50 staff, often with specialist roles e.g. Employer Liaison,In<strong>format</strong>ion Management, In<strong>format</strong>ion Technology.
