The experience of Poland is relevant for Croatia becauseCroatia is currently undergoing a similar transition process on its way towards entering the EuropeanUnion.Within the project, we conducted a comprehensive research at all Croatian universities investigatingthe need for establishing career advising services. The fourth chapter of the <strong>handbook</strong>contains the research results. These results demonstrate that such services are greatly needed,and we believe the results will help in determining the most appropriate models for career advisingservices in every Croatian university. Within the project, a seminar was organised at theUniversity of Rijeka to draft models of career advising services for every Croatian university. Participantsof the seminar included representatives of Croatian universities and European partnerinstitutions (from Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom) who, in cooperation with expertsparticipating in the project, drafted the career advising services models. These models are presentedin the fifth chapter of the <strong>handbook</strong>. Finally, the sixth chapter contains recommendationsof experts that the universities should bear in mind when launching career advising centres.The first appendix to the <strong>handbook</strong> contains the SWOT analysis for Croatian universities thatparticipated in the project, considering the internal and external factors that should be taken intoaccount when launching advising services. The second appendix is a map of European countriesthat currently have career advising services, and the third is a list of all institutions and individualsthat participated in particular project activities. Finally, the fourth appendix contains biographiesof all members of the expert team that participated in the project “Platform for the CareerAdvice Centres in Croatia (CAREER)”.The entire <strong>handbook</strong> is bilingual because it is published through an international project. Theoriginal version of the <strong>handbook</strong> was written in <strong>English</strong> and translated into Croatian. Regardingthe terminology of the <strong>handbook</strong>, the agreement among the consortium members was that theterm “career advising services“ would be more appropriate than the original term “career advicecentre” used in the project proposal, since the accent should be on career advising as being a partof university student services. Regarding the translation of Croatian terms into <strong>English</strong> the term“Studentski centar” is translated as “Student Centre”, which denotes an institution and locationwhere the largest number of services is provided for students of a particular university. The term“Studentski zbor”, which denotes the umbrella organisation of students of particular universities,is translated in <strong>English</strong> as “Student Union”.We hope this <strong>handbook</strong> will be an important referential material for universities that will belaunching career advising services. In addition, we believe that this <strong>handbook</strong> will help in advocatingfor and promoting the significance of career advising services at universities among decision-makersat the university level, in government institutions, local communities, the economicand civil sector.Editor’s Note
