Cooperation with companiesOffices of career advising services are the places where employers looking for employees withhigher education are served in a professional manner, which is great facilitation not only forinternational corporations, but also for middle-sized and small companies. Thanks to careeradvising services, it is possible to develop a long-term cooperation between companies and auniversity.3.5. Main goals and tasks of career advising services in PolandCareer advising services support students at the stage of their transition from education periodto labour market. Models of career advising services (1): The careers service atNicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (NCU)University: With 40,000 students at two campuses (Torun, Bydgoszcz), 14 departments and48 faculties, it is the biggest university in Central Poland.History: The Careers Service for NCU Students and Graduates in Torun is the first such officein Poland and at the moment is one of the largest offices operating within the Polish Career advisingservices Network. of the project engaged such personalities and institutions as the director of the Careers Serviceof the University of Hull in Great Britain - John C. Franks (the honorary patron and the main consultantof the Careers Service as well as the organiser of training courses), Nicolaus CopernicusUniversity in Torun, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Polish National Labour Office, RegionalLabour Office in Torun and the Know-How Foundation. Moreover, the project was supported bythe UK Embassy and the British Council in Warsaw. The staff was trained both in Poland and GreatBritain, thanks to the EU’s TEMPUS programme.Financing: In the years 1993-2005 the Careers Service in Torun was financed and administeredon the basis of the agreement signed by NCU and the regional labour office in Torun. In1993, both the institutions agreed to equally share the expenses of the Careers Service and itsstaff. Gradually, the financing of the Careers Service was taken over by the university, whichtoday is the only institution to finance and administer the Service. The university pays the staffof the Careers Service; moreover, the Service receives an annual budget for operating costs whichis approved by the rector and the treasurer of the university. Furthermore, during the academicyear the Careers Service has the possibility of obtaining additional financial means, mainly byorganising careers fairs and presenting various companies at the university (this income providesabout 10%-15% of the entire budget).The Careers Service does not charge for its services, except for the presentation of companiesat the university and at careers fairs.NCU Careers Service in the university structure: The Careers Service of NCU constitutes an independentorganisational unit within the administrative structure of the university. It is directlysubordinate to the Information and Promotion Rector and to the Chancellor of the University.Staff: In 1993 the Careers Service of NCU had three employees. In 2006, it now has seven employees:five full-time workers, one person employed as the EFS (European Social Fund) projectmanager and one person employed within the training programme of the Labour Office. In thecourse of the academic year the Service is also helped by student volunteers.Most of our staff are graduates of such university courses as pedagogy, sociology, etc. Theyattend professional training courses and post-graduate studies in professional counselling, administrationof human resources, psychology, group counselling.
