Table 12 presents a ranking of activities derived by adding up the positive responses in the columns“useful” and “very useful” and calculating the aggregate sum of these responses for all therespondents. The activities were ranked in importance based on these aggregate sums. The results of Table 12 illustrate that, regardless of the university, Croatian students clearlyexpress their needs for activities typically organised by career advising services. As can be seenfrom the table, which presents their preferences in a rank-order from most highly regarded andthen descending, they rank all the potential activities of career advising services very highly. At all six universities, individual counselling is considered as the most useful activity careeradvising services could organise. It is followed by a university web site that offers information andadvice on employment, as well as job advertisements. Next come employment services which wouldenable them to carry out part-time jobs and internships and while studying, trainings for skills developmentand fourthly, an information centre about academic opportunities for continuing theirstudies. Students would therefore prefer an active role of the university in their future educationaland career opportunities. Public events, newsletters and psychological testing are at the bottom ofthe list, but they are still considered useful by as much as 85% of Croatian students.Next, the data for each of the six universities is presented in turn, accompanied with a moredetailed analysis.TABLE 13: Rank-order of activities according to the ratings of usefulness given by students at the University of ZagrebUseful or very useful (%)Individual counselling on professional interests and opportunities 95,3Information on opportunities for further education 95,3University web site with job ads and employment advice 95,2Employment services (part-time jobs, internships) 95,0Trainings and workshops for skills development 92,8Assistance in drafting CV and job application 90,9Public events (career days, presentations) 87,6Psychological testing (abilities, interests) 85,3Newsletters and publications with information and advice on employment 83,6A very high percentage of students in Zagreb rated all activities either as useful or very useful. The highest percentage of students prefers individual counselling, information on furthereducational opportunities, and a web site with employment information and advice and employmentservices. Students in Zagreb would clearly prefer a more active role of their University inproviding services and information related to their future education and career opportunities. An interesting feature about the response of students in Zagreb is that they rate the activityof “information about further academic opportunities” as second most useful. The same situationis in Dubrovnik, while in the other four universities this activity comes in third to sixth placein the ranking. A possible explanation for the situation in Zagreb is both the fact that the Universityof Zagreb is by far the largest centre for postgraduate studies in Croatia, and also it has thebiggest market for persons with higher education degrees.47Student needs for career advising services in Croatian universities: Research results & report
