In 1786,Tvrđa and the Upper Town united under the name of “City of Osijek” and economic and culturaldevelopment began to take place.The University of Osijek is of great importance to the region of Eastern Croatia, which has apopulation of one million, and the University responds to the social and economic needs of thefive Slavonian counties. The current and future role of the University of Osijek is especially importantin correlation to the high unemployment rate in the Osijek-Baranja County (26.1%).About the university: Higher education in Osijek started with the Higher Theological School(Osijek’s first institution of higher education), founded in 1707 as Studium Philosophicum Essekini.Some 20 years later, in 1724, the Higher Theological School was founded as Studium TheologicumEssekini. <strong>Institut</strong>ions of higher education in Osijek were famous for the spreading ofhumanistic education, study of languages and classical literature as well as for contributing toCroatian language and literature.The modern University of Osijek was founded on 31 May 1975.
