Observed the wife of a correspondentwho was on the scene: "There was a little boy with his throat apparentlyshot to pieces . . . and when they feed him now the food and water comeout the side of his neck." Still, wrote Dr. Charles Eastman, "they objected verystrenuously to being treated by army surgeons . .. and [said] they never wantedto see a uniform again."
