Hierarchical FederationsHierarchical FederationsHierarchical federations use a top-down, pyramid structure to spread eventcollection loads over a wide area. The structure is similar to an organizationchart. There is no set number of levels that you have to create - you can createthe levels that make the most sense for your business needs. In a hierarchical federation, you can connect to any CA Enterprise Log Managerserver to see reports on its event data and data from any of the child serversbeneath it. The scope of the data that you can access is limited by where youstart in the hierarchy. If you start in the middle of the hierarchy, you can see onlythat server's data, and any of its child server's data. The higher up you move ina hierarchical federation, the wider the scope of network data you have. At thetop level, you have access to all of the data in the whole deployment.Hierarchical federations are useful, for example, in regional deployments.Suppose that you want local resources to have access to event data within acertain hierarchy, or branch, of the network, but not the event data in other, parallel branches. You could create a hierarchical federation with two or moreparallel branches to contain the data for each region. Each of the branches couldreport to a management CA Enterprise Log Manager server at the headquartersoffice for the top-down view of all event log reports.Hierarchical Federation ExampleIn the federation map shown in the diagram that follows, the network uses themanagement CA Enterprise Log Manager server as a reporting server andmultiple collection servers in a configuration that is similar to an organizationchart. The management/reporting server acts as a parent CA Enterprise LogManager server and provides user authentication, authorization, and majormanagement functions as well as the reporting functions of handling queries, reports and alerts. The collection servers in this example would be children ofManagement/Reporting Server 1. You could arrange additional levels in thehierarchy. However, there can be no more than one management server.Additional levels would be composed of reporting servers as parents to collectionservers.156 Implementation Guide
