Server Planning■Restore point serverReporting servers typically act as restore point servers for the databasesthey once held. If your network is large, consider dedicating a CA EnterpriseLog Manager server to this role. A restore point server performs thesefunctions:– Is used to investigate the logs of old events.– Receives restored databases from a remote storage server that holds allcold databases.– Recatalogs the archive catalog to add the restored databases to itsrecords.– Retains records for different configured lengths of time, depending onthe restoration method.The advantage of having a dedicated restore point is that you can excludethis server from your federation to ensure that no federated reports containold, restored data. All reports generated on the restore point server reflectonly event data from the restored databases.■Remote storage serverA remote storage server, which is not a CA Enterprise Log Manager server,performs this function:– Receives highly-compressed, auto-archived databases from reportingservers at configured intervals before these databases can be deleteddue to age or lack of free disk space. Configuring auto-archiving savesyou the effort of manually moving databases.– Stores cold databases locally. Optionally, you can move or copy thesedatabases to an off-site location for long-term storage. Cold databasesare typically retained for the number of years mandated by governmentregulatory agencies.Remote storage servers are never part of a CA Enterprise Log Managerfederation. However, they deserve consideration when you plan yourarchitecture.Dedicating a server to a certain role does not mean you cannot perform functionsfrom it that are associated with other roles. Consider an environment withdedicated collection servers and a reporting server. If you want to schedule analert to check for a condition on a collection server because it is time-critical thatyou be notified as soon as possible, you have this flexibility.20 Implementation Guide
