Federation PlanningAt the network level, having multiple CA Enterprise Log Manager servers allowsyou to handle greater event volumes. From a reporting perspective, using afederation allows you to control who can access event data and how much of thatdata they can see.In a basic two-server environment, the management server takes the role of areporting server. The internal CA EEM server on the management CA EnterpriseLog Manager server manages federation configurations centrally and globally.(You can change the configuration options from any CA Enterprise Log Managerserver in the network.) You configure the collection CA Enterprise Log Managerserver as a child of the reporting server, so that queries and reports include themost recent data.Note: If you have an existing CA EEM server that you plan to use with CAEnterprise Log Manager, configure the CA Enterprise Log Manager servers in thesame way. The dedicated, remote CA EEM server stores these configurations. You can also set local configuration options to override the global configurations, allowing selected CA Enterprise Log Manager servers to perform differently thanothers. Examples include sending email reports and alerts through a differentmail server, or scheduling reports specific to a branch of the network at differenttimes.More information:Hierarchical Federations (see page 156)Meshed Federations (see page 157)Queries and Reports in a Federated Environment (see page 155)Configuring a CA Enterprise Log Manager Federation (see page 159)Create a Federation MapCreating a federation map is a useful step in planning and implementing yourfederation configuration. The larger your network is, the more helpful this map isduring the actual configuration tasks. You can use any commercial graphics ordrawing program, or you can sketch the map by hand. The more details you cansupply in your map, the faster you can complete the configuration. To create a federation map1. Start your map with the two basic CA Enterprise Log Manager servers, management and collection, and provide the details for each.2. Decide whether you need additional collection servers and whether theyrepresent the top of a hierarchy or a unit in a mesh.Chapter 2: Planning Your Environment 29
