She then makes a Wits + Occult roll,opposed by the target’s Permanent Essence. To activate this Charm, the character mustdelineate an approximately circular area aroundhimself, which can be no more than his PermanentEssence in yards wide. Normally the character mustdraw this circle in chalk or otherwise spend a turnpreparing it, although the use of a tied rope or otherprop might speed the process. Once the circle iscomplete, it becomes inviolate to Essence. No spellor Charm can affect the user or anyone else withinthe sphere (Charms with a duration are cancelled,although spells with a duration are not.) Thosestanding within the circle cannot activate spells orCharms of their own. In addition, hearthstones andartifacts stop functioning within the circle, althoughthey suffer no permanent damage.In order to maintain this Charm, the Solar mustpay an additional 1 Willpower after his Essence inturns have passed, or the effect ends.ATHLETICSPHILOSOPHYAthletics represents a character’s talent in allmatters of physical activity. As such, it is perhapsthe Ability most closely tied to Attributes — feats ofAthletics are generally feats of Strength or Dexterity.As such, Solar Athletics Charms generally provideeffects that improve the feats a Solar can performwith one or the other Attribute.For improving their Strength, Solars have a smalland extremely direct tree, focused entirely onboosting one’s ability to lift and break things withsheer force. The Dexterity tree is broader, coveringeffects that affect a Solar’s balance, speed, andjumping distance, as well as providing athleticallyenhancedattack Charms. Further development ofthis tree would largely stem from this portion of thetree, leading to increasingly impossible movementsand stronger attack boosts.ABYSSAL EQUIVALENTSThe foremost Athletics Charm available to Abyssalswhich Solars have no equivalent of is EnhancedDexterity Discipline. Since Athletics deals more orless equivalently with Strength and Dexterity, thisseems like a viable conversion.122
