Looking Busy<br />

The art <strong>of</strong> looking busy <strong>an</strong>d efficient, even when one is<br />

really just arr<strong>an</strong>ging one's social life, or powernapping,<br />

is <strong>an</strong> essential skill for <strong>an</strong>y <strong>IT</strong> m<strong>an</strong>ager.<br />

This is the fifth in my series <strong>of</strong> hints for aspiring <strong>IT</strong> m<strong>an</strong>agers. Here, we tell<br />

you how to look busy <strong>an</strong>d efficient. The most import<strong>an</strong>t thing for <strong>an</strong> <strong>IT</strong><br />

m<strong>an</strong>ager is to look busy. In fact, it is a technique that dominates the<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>of</strong> the public sector, where whole <strong>of</strong>fice blocks are filled with<br />

people earnestly engaged in nothing more th<strong>an</strong> sending emails to each other<br />

full <strong>of</strong> positioning papers, strategy documents, directives <strong>an</strong>d pl<strong>an</strong>s. Looking<br />

busy is one <strong>of</strong> the primary skills that is required in a m<strong>an</strong>ager, <strong>an</strong>d one looks in<br />

vain for sage advice on this in the m<strong>an</strong>uals on m<strong>an</strong>agement that are sold in<br />

airports. To fill a crying need, I <strong>of</strong>fer the following tips.<br />

Be creative in staggering your hours: I once knew a m<strong>an</strong>ager who arrived<br />

early at the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>an</strong>d always was the last to leave. It impressed everyone, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

nobody seemed to realise that he, legitimately, took four hours <strong>of</strong>f in the middle<br />

<strong>of</strong> the day.<br />

Spend your time at a PC. The PC is a wonderful invention because it is<br />

almost impossible to detect whether the user is doing productive work or not.<br />
