SB 499 Capstone I – Applied: Senior Project<br />

3 credits (AS)<br />

In the Capstone Seminar students focus on specific academic<br />

projects that integrate the knowledge and skills from their<br />

previous course work, and prepare them for the next stage <strong>of</strong><br />

their pr<strong>of</strong>essional development. The course stresses written,<br />

oral, and visual communication; pragmatic problem-solving<br />

skills; setting and achieving specific goals; and selfassessment.<br />

A major research paper will be written. (Offered<br />

fall and spring terms) Prerequisite: SB 375 Methods <strong>of</strong> Inquiry or<br />

HG 375 Historical Methods. Student must be eligible for graduation at<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> the term in which seminar is taken.<br />

Sport Management<br />

SP 118 Introduction to Sport Management<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course provides the student with an overview <strong>of</strong> the<br />

issues encountered by managers in sports organizations.<br />

Ethical and moral issues facing sport managers will also be<br />

addressed. The course will explore career opportunities in<br />

sport with special emphasis being placed on helping the<br />

student understand the qualifications, skills, and career<br />

patterns <strong>of</strong> sport managers.<br />

SP 253 Facility and Event Management<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course provides students with in-depth, hands-on<br />

experience managing all aspects <strong>of</strong> a major event, applying<br />

project management tools and teamwork skills. Students<br />

increase their knowledge <strong>of</strong>, and contacts in, the event<br />

management pr<strong>of</strong>ession. This course is designed to simulate<br />

the world <strong>of</strong> work and is delivered using a problem based<br />

learning model. Working in groups, students will direct their<br />

own learning by researching, planning, designing, executing<br />

and evaluating all facets <strong>of</strong> a major event.<br />

SP 257 Organization and Administration <strong>of</strong> Sport<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course provides knowledge and awareness <strong>of</strong> the rules<br />

and laws governing various sport organizations and<br />

participants, including developing an understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

structures <strong>of</strong> various sport governing bodies in amateur and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional sport; developing an awareness <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the<br />

policies in the management <strong>of</strong> these organizations; acquiring<br />

the skills necessary to develop policies within an organization;<br />

understanding the social, legal, ethical, economic, political and<br />

educational impact <strong>of</strong> organizational policies; and understanding<br />

how individual sport managers impact organizational<br />

policy decisions.<br />

SP 269 Current Issues in Sport Management<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course introduces students to current topics and issues<br />

in the field <strong>of</strong> sport and sport management. The course<br />

provides the student with an in-depth look at and analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

many <strong>of</strong> the current issues facing the sports industry as well<br />

as issues encountered by managers <strong>of</strong> sports organizations.<br />

The course will help the student apply sport management<br />

techniques to effectively address current issues and problems.<br />

The course consists <strong>of</strong> interactive discussion with the<br />

students being responsible for presenting and researching the<br />

current material. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills<br />

are fostered during the course. Topics include gender equity,<br />

racial issues, National Collegiate Athletic Association rules,<br />

franchise relocations, sport agency, and athlete conduct<br />

issues.<br />

SP 328 Sport Marketing, Promotion and Sales<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to examine and explore the<br />

concepts and principles <strong>of</strong> marketing, promotion, and sales in<br />

relation to sport and physical activity. Students will examine<br />

and develop marketing strategies that can be applied to the<br />

sport world. Marketing issues, specific to sport, involving<br />

facilities, events, sales, promotion, spectators, consumers, and<br />

sponsors will be discussed. Career opportunities in sport<br />

marketing are also explored. (Offered fall term) Prerequisite: SP<br />

118 Principles <strong>of</strong> Sport Management<br />

SP 355 Sport Business and Finance<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course examines the management core areas <strong>of</strong> finance<br />

and business as they apply to the sport industry. The course<br />

provides students with an overview <strong>of</strong> the business <strong>of</strong><br />

amateur, intercollegiate, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional sports enterprises.<br />

In addition, the course investigates the business-related issues<br />

encountered by managers <strong>of</strong> sports organizations and covers<br />

how business and financial principles can be applied to<br />

effectively address these issues. In particular, the course will<br />

discuss issues involved in financing sport such as the public<br />

financing <strong>of</strong> stadiums, sponsorships, fund raising, revenue<br />

sources, and cost containment. The development <strong>of</strong> effective<br />

communication skills are emphasized through class<br />

presentations and written assignments. Leadership and<br />

interpersonal communications are developed through small<br />

group projects and meetings. Critical thinking and problemsolving<br />

skills will be fostered through the use <strong>of</strong> the case<br />

study method. (Offered fall term) Prerequisite: SP 118 Principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sport Management<br />

SP 364 Sport in Society<br />

3 credits (AS)<br />

This course examines sports through a sociological lens. A<br />

critical examination <strong>of</strong> the impact on sports and society<br />

includes a discussion <strong>of</strong> the cultural, political and economic<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> sports.<br />
