SA 381 Internship<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Studio Art and Photography internships consist <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fcampus<br />

fieldwork based on a learning contract signed by the<br />

student, agency supervisor, and faculty sponsor. An<br />

orientation session is required prior to fieldwork. Work is<br />

supervised by the program field work director and a faculty<br />

adviser. A written evaluation <strong>of</strong> the experience is required <strong>of</strong><br />

the student and the agency. The student develops a written<br />

document that synthesizes the internship and academic<br />

activities. (Offered spring term) Prerequisites: Junior status and<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor and academic advisor.<br />

SA 393 Internship Preparation<br />

1 credit (CS)<br />

This course, taken at the end <strong>of</strong> the sophomore year or fall<br />

term <strong>of</strong> the junior year, readies students for interviewing for<br />

and getting the most out <strong>of</strong> their junior year internships.<br />

SA 410 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Photography Practices<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

In addition to teaching the practical aspects <strong>of</strong> setting up and<br />

maintaining a pr<strong>of</strong>itable photo business, this course will cover<br />

crucial pr<strong>of</strong>essional topics such as getting and keeping clients,<br />

archiving images, First Amendment issues, libel and<br />

misappropriation <strong>of</strong> images, intellectual property and<br />

copyright laws, contracts, pricing, estimates, tax preparation,<br />

record keeping, self-promotion, portfolio preparation, model<br />

releases, and much more. Prerequisites: SA 261 Studio<br />

Photography or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor<br />

SA 415 Graphic Forms<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course is an advanced exploration <strong>of</strong> drawing,<br />

concentrating on formal and conceptual concerns. Students<br />

work with contemporary ideas about drawing; the basic<br />

elements <strong>of</strong> edge, line, mass, form and composition are<br />

encountered at a new level <strong>of</strong> complexity. Students are<br />

expected to be innovative. For advanced work in drawing,<br />

this course can be "stackedǁ‖ (taken multiple times by taking<br />

Research Topics in the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472).<br />

Prerequisite: SA 111 Drawing: Composition and Perception or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor<br />

SA 493 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Practices and Portfolio<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students build and refine their portfolios to a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

level in preparation for career placement. They explore<br />

employment opportunities, examine career goals, and write<br />

and design their resumes and self-promotional packages.<br />

Students explore the business side <strong>of</strong> their pr<strong>of</strong>ession by<br />

learning how to develop pr<strong>of</strong>essional relationships;<br />

understand contracts and other business documents;<br />

negotiate and estimate fees; start, manage, and market a<br />

business; address ethical and legal issues and present their<br />

portfolio. (Offered spring term) Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> core<br />

courses in Studio Art, Photography or Fashion Studies<br />

SA 498 Senior Project: Research and Development<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This is the first term <strong>of</strong> a linked two-term capstone course in<br />

Studio Art. Students propose, research, and initiate work on a<br />

major creative project and a related research paper that link<br />

students’ academic experiences and their pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals.<br />

Over the course <strong>of</strong> the semester, each student meets with an<br />

active pr<strong>of</strong>essional from the field <strong>of</strong> studio art or<br />

photography. This pr<strong>of</strong>essional contact provides valuable and<br />

appropriate feedback for the student toward his or her work<br />

and career plans. Student must pass with a "C" or better. (Offered<br />

fall term)<br />

SA 499 Senior Project: Thesis Exhibition<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This is the culminating term <strong>of</strong> a linked two-term capstone<br />

course in studio art. Students complete work on a major<br />

creative project and a related research paper that link together<br />

students’ academic experiences and their pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals.<br />

During the final weeks <strong>of</strong> the course, each student has an oral<br />

defense in which he or she presents the year’s work to a<br />

committee <strong>of</strong> faculty and pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Over the course <strong>of</strong><br />

the semester, each student meets with an active pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

from the field <strong>of</strong> Studio Art. This pr<strong>of</strong>essional contact<br />

provides valuable and appropriate feedback for the student<br />

toward his or her work and career plans. (Offered spring<br />

term) Student must pass with a "C" or better. Prerequisite: SA<br />

498/FD498 Senior Project: Research and Development<br />

Visual Communications<br />

VC 112 Concepting (Drawing for Designers)<br />

3 credits<br />

Strong drawing skills enable designers to communicate<br />

effectively with clients and are a fundamental keystone <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course. Students go beyond observational skills and<br />

concentrate on the development <strong>of</strong> ideas on paper. They<br />

learn to problem-solve visual design projects and create<br />

dynamic client presentations using research, thumbnails,<br />

expanded concept sketches, freehand sketching, and an<br />

invented use <strong>of</strong> copied and digital materials. They also<br />

develop a visual diary that enable observers to better<br />

comprehend and visualize the designer’s ideas.<br />

VC 118 Digital Foundations<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course utilizes contemporary computer applications to<br />

harness the creative potential <strong>of</strong> prominent digital imaging<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware packages and related output devices. It combines<br />

students’ conceptual integration <strong>of</strong> technology with aesthetic<br />

judgment, using a cross disciplinary approach, to expand their<br />

horizons beyond the traditional approaches to design and artmaking.<br />

Students learn to make educated decisions regarding<br />

use <strong>of</strong> emerging digital and new media technology within<br />

their own artistic style and aesthetic development.<br />
