SA 162 Photography II<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
This course begins where Photography I leaves <strong>of</strong>f, with<br />
advanced black and white techniques including fiber-based<br />
printing, an introduction to the Zone System, and an<br />
introduction to alternative techniques such as pinhole<br />
photography, multiple printing, image collage and<br />
deconstruction, and an introduction to a hybrid analog-digital<br />
workflow. Students will concentrate on developing their own<br />
personal style <strong>of</strong> photography by working with a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
visual approaches and media. Prerequisites: SA 161 Photography I<br />
SA 168 Time, Movement, and Narrative<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Students explore concepts <strong>of</strong> time based art and design to<br />
create works in media ranging from video, animation,<br />
multimedia, audio and performance. Students create both<br />
narrative and non-narrative video and time based structures,<br />
with emphasis on the development <strong>of</strong> students’ ideas, visual<br />
and narrative skills. This class stresses the development <strong>of</strong><br />
visual expression, self-expression, and ideation/concept<br />
building, using techniques and strategies that include<br />
storyboarding, scriptwriting, proposal and design/creative<br />
brief writing. Students will work collaboratively and<br />
individually in creating original works in digital video, and<br />
other time-based media, including options such as hand<br />
drawn and frame animation, video installation, performance,<br />
sound, and sculptural elements. Students research the work <strong>of</strong><br />
contemporary and recent video, performative, animation<br />
artists, and motion designers in order to place their work in<br />
the context <strong>of</strong> contemporary international practice in multiple<br />
disciplines.<br />
SA 211 Figure Drawing<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Figure Drawing is a second year drawing course emphasizing<br />
the human figure. The nude model is used as a vehicle for<br />
learning about foreshortening, proportion, and varied<br />
drawing media. Simultaneously, students explore historic,<br />
conceptual and expressive aspects <strong>of</strong> the human figure in art.<br />
For advanced work in figure drawing, this course can be<br />
"stacked" (taken multiple times by taking Research Topics in<br />
the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472). (Offered fall term)<br />
Prerequisite: SA 111 Drawing: Composition and Perception or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor<br />
SA 231 Printmaking<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Students are exposed to various printmaking techniques such<br />
as: intaglio, relief, and a range <strong>of</strong> experimental applications.<br />
Knowledge <strong>of</strong> these media enable students to experience new<br />
drawing techniques and to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong><br />
multiples. For advanced work in printmaking, this course can<br />
be "stacked" (taken multiple times by taking Research Topics<br />
in the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472).<br />
SA 241 Ceramics<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Students are introduced to the basic methods <strong>of</strong> preparing<br />
and forming clay, so as to develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> clay as<br />
a sculptural and functional medium. They are exposed to<br />
pinch, coil and slab methods, as well as wheel throwing,<br />
decorating and glazing. For advanced work in ceramics, this<br />
course can be "stacked" (taken multiple times by taking<br />
Research Topics in the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472).<br />

SA 242 Sculpture: Glass/Mixed Media<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Using a variety <strong>of</strong> sculpture techniques, students explore the<br />
essential characteristics <strong>of</strong> three-dimensional form through<br />
projects that address scale, space, multiples, site and materials.<br />
The course investigates basic glass fusing/kiln forming,<br />
casting, and welding techniques. Students study the work <strong>of</strong><br />
contemporary and historically significant sculptors. For<br />
advanced work in sculpture, glass or metals, this course can<br />
be stacked intoǁ‖ multiple times by taking Research Topics<br />
in the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472. (Offered fall and<br />
spring terms)<br />
SA 261 Studio Photography<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
Students work in a fully equipped studio using strobe lighting<br />
systems, medium format and digital cameras to create<br />
portraiture, figure and product photography under controlled<br />
lighting situations. A variety <strong>of</strong> lighting techniques are<br />
studied. (Offered fall term) Prerequisite: SA 161 Photography I,<br />
and SA 162 Photography II, or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor<br />
SA 263 Digital Photography<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
This course covers the practice <strong>of</strong> digital photography with<br />
emphasis on using pr<strong>of</strong>essional production techniques to<br />
build an efficient workflow to maximize productivity and<br />
creativity with digital photography. Students learn techniques<br />
<strong>of</strong> image capture, camera controls, digital exposure,<br />
brightness range and optics for optimal digital images, color<br />
management, color theory, and optimizing files for print.<br />
Students also learn image distribution and organization using<br />
Adobe Lightroom to create an image database using tagging<br />
XIFF data, search, to assist in cataloging and archiving digital<br />
images. Students will begin working on a body <strong>of</strong> images that<br />
reflects their artistic interests. Creative decision-making,<br />
problem solving, and the relationship between personal<br />
vision and contemporary art practice will all be explored.<br />
Through discussion, research, essay writing, critique, and<br />
creative response, students will engage in a critical dialog with<br />
the work <strong>of</strong> their peers and recognized contemporary artists<br />
in order to inform their own creative process. Prerequisites: SA<br />
161 Photography, SA 162 Photography II, or permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />
instructor<br />
SA 276 Computer Imaging<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
This course covers theory and practice <strong>of</strong> digital imaging in a<br />
