Human Services: Counseling and Mental Health (Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science)<br />

The Counseling and Mental Health concentration provides a broad overview <strong>of</strong> counseling services within the mental health system.<br />

The curriculum addresses issues related to current mental health practice, providing students with a base <strong>of</strong> knowledge about the<br />

systems and services for children, adolescents and adults.<br />

Goals:<br />

• Provide students with an understanding <strong>of</strong> the mental health system;<br />

• Develop basic counseling skills;<br />

• Develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> counseling theory and approaches; and<br />

• Prepare students for pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling environments.<br />

Special Features:<br />

Two internships (160 hours each) in mental health settings are based on students’ interests, experience and academic preparation.<br />

Program Requirements:<br />

• Students must earn a minimum grade <strong>of</strong> a "C" in each 100-200 level Human Services course;<br />

• Students must have earned at least 30 academic hours and have permission <strong>of</strong> the Human Services Program Director to be<br />

eligible for an internship;<br />

• Students may repeat any Human Services course in which they earned less than a "C" only once; students who cannot achieve a<br />

grade <strong>of</strong> "C" or above on the second attempt may not continue in the program; and<br />

• Students must complete 12 credit hours in a Counseling and Mental Health Internship.<br />
