vision. Students learn how to capture, control, manipulate<br />

and print digital images using Adobe Photoshop, a desktop<br />

computer, analog and digital cameras, scanners, desktop and<br />

large format printers. Students learn Photoshop technique by<br />

completing a series <strong>of</strong> assignments and exercises that cover<br />

basics <strong>of</strong> digital imaging theory, digital camera RAW file<br />

adjustments and management, image sizing and resolution,<br />

basic image control, tonal and color correction, retouching,<br />

hand coloring, sharpening, noise management, filtering,<br />

addition <strong>of</strong> text, creative selection, contrast masking, layer<br />

masks, collage and montage techniques, and more. Prerequisite:<br />

SA 161 Photography I<br />

SA 309 Special Topics in the Arts<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This is a repeatable course in which the content varies each<br />

year. Different faculty from a variety <strong>of</strong> programs across the<br />

College may teach this rotating course. The content depends<br />

on the faculty member's expertise and the needs and interests<br />

<strong>of</strong> the student population. Potential topics include a mix <strong>of</strong><br />

SA and FA courses: Art and Autobiography, Art and Politics,<br />

Museum as Medium, the Landscape Tradition, Photo-based<br />

Installation Art, Mural Painting, Public Art, Artist's Books,<br />

Sports Photography, and Fashion Photography. Prerequisites<br />

may be necessary for certain <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

SA 311 Life Drawing and 3-D Forms<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course explores the relationship between two- and threedimensional<br />

representation <strong>of</strong> the human form. Students<br />

draw and sculpt the figure, concentrating on proportion and<br />

anatomy. Emphasis is on personal artistic growth as well as<br />

process, technique and content. For advanced work in figure<br />

drawing, this course can be "stackedǁ‖ (taken multiple times by<br />

taking Research Topics in the Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or<br />

472). (Offered spring term) Prerequisite: SA 211 Figure Drawing<br />

or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor<br />

SA 320 On Assignment: Location and Documentary<br />

Photography<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students learn the techniques <strong>of</strong> documentary,<br />

photojournalistic and assignment photography. Students learn<br />

on assignmentǁ‖ by creating their own photo stories and<br />

completing various editorial photographic assignments<br />

designed to mirror common assignments for publication.<br />

Students work on and learn to shoot both in-depth projects<br />

and single eventǁ‖ assignments. Location lighting,<br />

environmental portraiture, event, fashion, sports, and action<br />

photography, pre shoot planning, access, ethics, model<br />

releases, working with the subject, and editorial strategies are<br />

covered. Students also study the work <strong>of</strong> well-known editorial<br />

photographers and photojournalists, both historic and<br />

contemporary to create an understanding <strong>of</strong> the history and<br />

development <strong>of</strong> documentary photography and its role in<br />

society, as well as to inspire more accomplished student work.<br />

Prerequisite: SA 161 Photography I, SA 263 Digital Photography, or<br />

SA 276 Computer Imaging, or SA 261 Studio Photography, or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> instructor<br />

SA 325 Large Format Photography and Fine Printing<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Large format cameras are capable <strong>of</strong> producing the highest<br />

photographic quality possible, and are thus the tool <strong>of</strong> choice<br />

for pr<strong>of</strong>essional and fine art photographers when image<br />

quality is <strong>of</strong> paramount importance. In this course, students<br />

study the history, theory and use <strong>of</strong> these cameras, and<br />

produce their own body <strong>of</strong> creative work suitable for their<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional portfolios. Prerequisites: SA 161 Photography I, SA<br />

162 Photography II, SA 261 Studio Photography, or permission <strong>of</strong><br />

instructor<br />

SA 330 Forensic Photography<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course examines the theory and techniques <strong>of</strong> forensic<br />

photography as a tool to aid in crime scene investigations,<br />

surveillance techniques, and presentation <strong>of</strong> photographic<br />

and imaging pro<strong>of</strong> at trial. The methodologies used to teach<br />

this course include lectures, laboratory work, PowerPoint<br />

presentations, videotapes, case studies, and class discussions.<br />

Prerequisite: SA 161 Photography I<br />

SA 351 Museum as Medium<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course is designed for students who are interested in all<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> gallery work and museum collections and those<br />

who are preparing for future opportunities in exhibiting their<br />

own work. It is structured as a shared research and gallery<br />

practicum course that directs a critical lens on the use and<br />

function <strong>of</strong> exhibition space and the museum and gallery as<br />

spatial material and framework for culture.<br />

SA 361 Site and Space<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course stresses advanced work in the concepts and<br />

techniques involved in making 2-D and 3-D works <strong>of</strong> art that<br />

respond to the issues <strong>of</strong> site and space. Students are<br />

introduced to pertinent contemporary artworks and are<br />

required to be innovative in their own art making. For<br />

advanced work in Site Space, this course can be "stackedǁ‖<br />

(taken multiple times by taking Research Topics in the Visual<br />

Arts FA371/372/471 or 472).<br />

Prerequisite: SA 131 Design and Color Theory, SA 132 Structuring<br />

Human Space or SA 111 Drawing: Composition and Perception, or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor<br />

SA 365 Alternative Processes<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course introduces students to a wide range <strong>of</strong> alternative,<br />

experimental and historic photographic processes including<br />

transfers, cyanotypes, VanDyke Brown, and Gum<br />

Bichromate printing. Students will learn to achieve stunning<br />

and unique photographic effects utilizing these unusual<br />

techniques. In addition to weekly assignments, each student<br />

will realize a major project using the process <strong>of</strong> his or her<br />
