507 Roadster was important also because it was the very first car
produced to compete with Mercedes-Benz’s beautiful 300 SL…
But things did not go as planned and BMW was actually about to
join the Daimler Group. All the shareholders refused this strictly,
Quandt Group took the lead and the rise of BMW was upon the
world of cars.
AN UNSTOPPABLE RISE FOR BMW!
Under the Quandt brothers’ administration, BMW first introduced
model 1500. It had brake discs, independent suspensions and a
modern design fit for all the drivers. All these aside, BMW’s iconic
back side window stripe “Hofmeister Kink” was also introduced
with 1500 and its still used in all BMW models to our date. Rapidly
growing, BMW’s second strike came with 02-Series which was
produced until 1976. By the end of 1968, BMW was producing V6
engines back again. Just around the same time, they got together a
team from Daimler and started making sells not just to Europe but
the whole world. They introduced 5-Series in 1972 and 02-Series
was replaced with 3-Series in 1975. The ever comfortable 7-Series
and the brand new 6-Series were introduced in 1977, giving BMW
a wide range.
Spending the 80s’ with their four main models, BMW was looking
for a suitable candidate for their 4x4 move by the end of 90s’.
Acquiring Rover Group in 1994, BMW used Land Rover’s knowhow
to introduce X5. They also started selling MG and Mini which
were also included in the Rover Group. Later those years, BMW
collaborated with the acclaimed controversial designer Chris Bangle.
According to some, Bangle ruined BMW’s designs but to many
others, he brought a brand new look to the brand. In the 90s’, BMW
introduced Z8, Z3, 6-Series, X5 and X3 models one by one. They also
hinted today’s i3 with unexpected moves on electric cars. BMW also
acquired Rolls-Royce in the same years but this deal was quite tough
with Volkswagen in play. In the end, Rolls-Royce stayed at BMW as
Volkswagen bought Bentley.
MOTORCYCLES AND THE M RANGE
Somewhere along this glorious journey, we have to mention BMW’s
exquisite motorcycles and M-Series. BMW’s motorsports department
M GmbH worked on improving BMW models’ performance, making
them track ready, just like Mercedes-Benz’s AMG. They first
introduced M1 as Ferrari and Porsche’s competitor, followed by
legends like M3 and M5. Even though there were no M7s, BMW’s
750i had a V12 engine and represented the brand in that engine
category. BMW took part in Formula One, World Rally Championship,
DTM, Le-Mans and almost all other motorsports races, earning so
