hangi Four Seasons otellerinin
favoriniz olduğunu ve nedenini
söyleyebilir misiniz?

Hepsi birbirinden farklı, favorim
yok. Elbette ki açılışına emek ve zaman
harcadıklarımın kalbimde başka
bir yeri var. Sonuçta hepsi Four
Seasons. Sadece dokuz şehirde aktifiz ve lüks otel hizmeti veriyoruz.
Kuzey Tayland’ta yer alan Chang Mai resort’umuzu da çok seviyorum.
Tokyo’daki otelimiz de çok güzel ve Sultanahmet’tekine benzer.
Four Seasons Sultanahmet’i seviyorum çünkü bu şehrin enerjisi çok
hoşuma gidiyor. Sorumlu olduğum için değil, ama sihirli bir yanları
oldukları için İstanbul’daki otellerin önceliği daha yüksek benim listemde.
İkisi de tamamen farklı: Sultanahmet’teki romantizm, etkileyicilik
ve özel olması, Boğaz’dakinin de ışığı, yeri, olanakları ve enerjisi.
Elbette ki otelleri yönettiğim için çok da objektif olamıyorum.
Trafik dışında İstanbul’da sevdiğiniz ve sevmediğiniz şeylerden
bahsedebilir misiniz? Boş vaktinizde İstanbul’da neler yapmayı
tercih ediyorsunuz? Şehrin size sunduğu özel ve anlamlı şeyler
nelerdir?
Öncelikle, hiç boş vaktim yok. Tatil günlerimde bile otelde geziniyorum.
Genel Müdür olunca hep orada olmak gerekiyor. Otel sanki
oturma odanızın bir uzantısı gibi oluyor. Bunun dışında sabahları
Bebek ve Arnavutköy’de koşuya çıkıyorum, sahilde spor yapmak
gerçekten keyifli. İstanbul’da araba kullanmayı da seviyorum. Bazen
haftasonları eğlencesine yola koyuluyorum ve trafiğe yakalanıyorum,
ama dayanılmayacak kadar fazla değil. İstanbul’daki sürücülerin
araba kullanma tarzını mizahi bir şekilde yorumluyorum ve inanılmaz
bir sanat türü olarak görüyorum. Keşke ben de İstanbullu bir taksi
sürücüsü gibi araba kullanabilseydim. Roma ve Nijerya ile karşılaştırdığımda
İstanbul trafiği biraz daha zorlayıcı. Karaköy’ü, restoranlarını
ve gece hayatını da çok beğeniyorum. Tiyatroya gitmeyi de seviyorum
ama dilden ötürü biraz zor oluyor bunu İstanbul’da yapmak.
Bunun yerine Avrupa’daki tiyatrolara gidiyorum. Gitmek istediğim
bir sürü modern sanat sergisi var. Çok güzel parçalar buluyorum,
ama son 15 yılımı Afrika sanatından koleksiyon yapmaya adadığım
için alan değiştirmem biraz zor. Resim satın almak aynı zamanda bir
yatırım, her galeri ziyaretimde aklım çeliniyor...
moment I’m enjoying this wonderful job I have, which allows
me to do what I’ve been doing since I was born: Relocating
now and then. I have to say that I have no plans to leave
Istanbul in the near future. We’ll see where the wind blows…
Having wandered around many Four Seasons hotels in
managerial positions, could you tell us which are your
favourite and why? Keeping Istanbul aside…
When the same question was appointed to our Chairman,
Isadore Sharp had answered: “You know it’s like asking me
which of your children is the favourite.” They are all different
from each other, no favourites. The ones I spent time and
energy in, opening up I feel closer to my heart of course.
It’s Four Seasons in the end, we only do nice cities and only deluxe
hotels. I also like our very nice resort in Chiang Mai, northern
Thailand. The one in Tokyo is also great and similar in size to the
one in Sultanahmet. I love Four Seasons Sultanahmet because I
also like the energy of the city a lot. Not because I work here, but
our hotels in Istanbul have high priority on my list but because
they both have something magical. They are totally different; the
romance, the charm, the exclusivity of Sultanahmet and the light,
the location, the facilities, the energy of Bosphorus. I’m biased of
course, I manage them…
Tell us a little bit about what you most like and dislike about our
city, apart from the traffic of course…What do you prefer doing in
your leisure time in Istanbul, what special and meaningful things
does it offer to you?
First of all I have no real leisure time, even on my off days I cruise
around the hotel. When you are the general manager, you need to
be there: It becomes an extension of your living room.
Apart from that, I do jogging in the mornings to Bebek and
Arnavutköy, running on the Bosphorus is very nice. I also enjoy
driving in Istanbul which I do for fun at the weekends and hit the
traffic, but not too much. The way people drive in Istanbul, which
I take with a sense of humour, is an amazing art. Comparing it
to Rome and Nigeria, I feel challenged by the traffic in Istanbul.
I want to be able to drive like a local taxi. Karaköy is also very
nice, with restaurants and the night life. I also enjoy the theatre
but because of the language barrier, it represents a struggle here.
Instead I go to the ones in Europe. There’s a lot of contemporary
art exhibitions which I tend to go. I find very nice pieces of it, but
since I dedicated my last 15 years to collecting African art now it’s
difficult to switch. These are also a part of investment, every time
I visit a gallery I’m tempted…
