Brooks Brothers’ın bu denli sevilmesinin başlıca sebebi, 1849’daki
Altın Hücum’unun öncülerinin özel dikim takım elbiseleri bekleyecek
zamanının olmamasıydı. New York’ta Henry Sands
Brooks tarafından kurulduğu tarihten yaklaşık 30 yıl sonra, Kaliforniya’nın
altın keşifçileri bu kez de Brooks Brothers’a hücum
ederek bugün geldiği yerin önünü açmış oldular.
Herkes tarafından bilinen altın koyun postunun bir
kurdeleden sallanır hali yün alıcılarının simgesi
haline geldi. Altın Post (Golden Fleece) adı
verilen sembolün tescillenmesi de 1850’ye
tekabül ediyor.
Markanın tarihinde, üzüntüyle hatırlanan nadir
bir olay bulunuyor ne yazık ki: Lincoln’ün
üzerinden çıkarmadığı Brooks Brothers ceketi
üzerindeyken 1865’te suikaste kurban
gitmesi.
İlerleyen zamanlarda, henüz 20. yıla gelinmemişken
polo yakalı ve düğmeli gömlekleri
piyasaya sürdüler. 1920 ile 1953
yılları arasında ise bir çok önemli buluşla
moda tarihine isimlerini altın harflerle kazıdılar.
Bunlardan ilki, Repp Kravat yani neredeyse
her erkeğin dolabında mutlaka bulunan
verev çizgili kravat. Aynı tarihlerde, ceket ve pantolonlar
için özel olarak üretilen Madras ve Gofre gibi
pamuklu kumaşlar da erkek giyimde yeni akımların
doğmasına yol açtı.
Brooks Brothers’ın kadın giyime yönelmesi, 1949’dan
önce gerçekleşmedi. Ancak, o yıl Vogue dergisine kapak
olan meşhur düğmeli pembe gömlek büyük ses getirdi
ve bayanlar tarafından kapışılmaya başladı.
Moda dünyasına kazandırdıkları en büyük icatları ise,
1953’te ‘Brookswave’ adını verdikleri pamuktan özel bir
dokuma. İlerleyen yıllarda da inanılmaz ticari başarılar gösteren
klasik gömlekte “yıka ve giy” konseptinin miladı budur.
The main reason why Brooks Brothers is so popular is
because of the fact that the pioneers of the Gold Rush,
which took place in 1849, had no time to wait for the
tailored suits. Brooks Brothers, which was started in
New York by Henry Sands Brooks, was rushed to by the
gold explorers of California 30 years after its foundation
and that is how it has become what it is today.
The version of the golden sheepskin
hanging from a ribbon, which everybody
knows, has become the symbol of wool
traders. The official registration of this
symbol that is called Golden Fleece took
place in 1850.
There is unfortunately a rare event
in the history of the brand, which is
remembered with sadness: Lincoln was
assassinated in 1865 while he wearing
the Brooks Brothers jacket that he rarely
took off.
Later on, before its 20th year, the brand
launched polo neck and buttoned shirts. Between
1920 and 1953, the brand made lots of important
innovations in the fashion world: one of these is
the Repp ties, which almost every men has in their
dressers. The fabrics such as Madras and Gofre,
which were specifically produced for jackets
and trousers, also paved the way for the new
movements in men’s clothing.
It wasn’t before 1949 that Brooks Brothers focused
on women’s clothing. However the famous
buttoned pink shirt, which was on the cover of the
Vogue magazine in the same year, made a great
impact and became very popular among women.
