“I ALWAYS THINK TODAY IS
MY FIRST DAY AT WORK”
Leonardo Baiocchi, is an Italian in Istanbul. He has enjoyed
working in our city, as the General Manager of Four Seasons
Bosphorus since 2011. Having lived and worked in several
different cities and countries all over the world, Baiocchi
believes Istanbul is special…
GTOL: Turizm sektöründe Türkiye’de olan
terörist saldırılarından ötürü devam etmekte
olan bir kriz var. Four Seasons
Bosphorus’un bu durum karşısındaki tutumu
nedir? Gelecek aylar ve yıllar için
tahminleriniz nelerdir?
Leonardo Baiocchi: Bu krizin pek çok yönü
var ve bunların arasındaki farkı anlamamız
gerekir. Rusya gibi komşularla ve Türkiye
ile direkt olarak iniltili olmasa da, mültecilerden
dolayı yaşanılan jeopolitik bir kriz söz
konusu. Politikadaki dalgalanmalar ekonomik
sorunlara de neden oldu. Bu dönemin
Türkiye için oldukça karışık olduğu bir gerçek.
Hizmet sektörü olarak bu karmaşanın
tam ortasındayız. Türkiye’deki pek çok otel
halihazırdaki durumdan nasibini aldı. Çünkü
ana pazarımızı, yani turistleri kaybetmekteyiz.
Gemi seyahatlerinin büyük bir kısmı
iptal edildi, artık İstanbul’a uğramıyorlar.
Turistik bir rota olarak düşünüldüğünde Türkiye’nin
üzerinde kara bir bulut var. Fakat
diğer yandan kurumsal müşteriler tarafında
hala iyi durumdayız, çünkü iş hayatı devam
ediyor. Türkiye’nin sosyal yaşantısı hala aktif
ve güçlü; etkinlikler ve düğünler yapılıyor.
Ama gerçeklerle yüzleşmemiz gerek: Turistler
Türkiye’ye gelmekten rahatsız.
GTOL: There’s an ongoing crisis in the
tourism sector due to the recent terrorist
activities in Turkey, how has Four Seasons
Bosphorus positioned itself against the
current situation? What would be your
projections for the next few months, years
to come?
Leonardo Baiocchi: We need to differentiate,
because there are many aspects to this
crisis. There’s a geopolitical crisis, which has
to do with the neighbours, such as Russia
and a refugee crisis not related to Turkey
per se, economic problems have arisen
and also the political shuffling. It would be
correct to say, this is a very complicated
period for Turkey. Being in the hospitality
industry, we are right in the middle of it.
Most hotels in Turkey are affected, because
we are losing the prime market, which
are the tourists. A good segment of the
cruise liners have been cancelled, they
don’t come to Istanbul any more. There’s
a bad cloud over Turkey as a country for
destination of tourism. On the other hand,
we’re doing well with corporate clients
because business is still going on. The
social Turkish life is still active and strong;
we host banquets, weddings, events. We
