GAMES
CIVILISATION V
www.civilization5.com
One of the most well-known turn-based strategy games available, Civilisation V
is a great choice for more powerful 2-in-1s. The game has been specifically
optimised for use with a touchscreen and, despite a few niggles, has an intuitive
UI that makes for easy gaming. Lead a civilisation from the dawn of man into the
space age, compete with players around the world, or just enjoy the impressive
graphics. It’s not a cheap game (~$100, or US$70) but a great choice for those who
want something very in depth. Make sure to check the system requirements,
and download it via Steam.
HALO: SPARTAN STRIKE
www.halowaypoint.com
Affordable, yet loads of fun, Spartan
Strike is a top-down shooter that lets
you relive some of the fun of the classic
Halo series. The game is designed to be
played via touch (as well as keyboard
and mouse, or Xbox controller) using
virtual joysticks. You play through
30 levels, including the endless fun
of mowing down enemies in a Warthog,
or taking them out with a Kestrel VTOL
aircraft. The game costs around ~$4
on the Microsoft Store (though is also
available via Steam) and only needs
fairly modest hardware.
MINECRAFT: WINDOWS 10 EDITION
www.mojang.com
For an endless variety of gameplay, it’s
hard to go past Minecraft, the Lego of
games. The new version brings touch
support, making it perfect for playing
on 2-in-1 devices. You can play with
friends across different platforms, too,
or just explore and create on your own
realm. The game costs $10 on the
Windows Store, but owners of the
original game can register and grab it
for free — though, it won’t support your
old worlds or previous saves. For those
unsure, there is a free trial available,
with 90 minutes of gameplay to see
if it’s for you.
TENTACLES: ENTER THE MIND
www.pressplay.dk
For something a little off the wall,
there isn’t anything better than a
weird tentacle game published by
Microsoft Studios. A combination
puzzle and adventure game, you play
as Lemmy, an endearing fantasy blob,
as you swing, jump, fight and explore
wonderfully colourful yet bizarre
worlds. The game includes touch
support, and is easy to casually play
on a 2-in-1 device. You can save games
to the cloud, and play across multiple
devices. It’s free. too (with in-game
purchases), and available for download
from the Microsoft store.
HITMAN GO
www.hitmango.com
A perfect complement to a 2-in-1
touchscreen, there are loads of great
puzzle games. But one of our favourite
puzzlers with more depth is Hitman GO
(Steam, ~$13, www.hitmango.com).
As the name suggests, you play as a
hitman, and have to strategically
navigate a gridded world to take out
enemies and infiltrate locations. By the
same developer, Lara Croft GO (Steam,
~$15, www.laracroftgo.com) is an endless
stream of puzzles, traps and lush
landscapes with a simple touch
interface and a great soundtrack.
Popcap games such as Bejewelled are
a great choice for simple yet addictive
fun. And don’t forget classics like
Minesweeper, available for free on
the Windows store.
