Organic Farming<br />

PURPOSE AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES<br />

This chapter is designed to show the importance of organic matter in plant nutrition <strong>and</strong><br />

how it is utilized as the principal source of additional fertility, apart from rock minerals.<br />

Methods of composting are also described.<br />

After studying this chapter, the student should be able to<br />

1. List the major sources of organic matter for gardening.<br />

2. Describe the importance of organic matter in soil fertility.<br />

3. Discuss the sources <strong>and</strong> importance of mulches.<br />

4. Discuss the methods of disease <strong>and</strong> pest control in organic farming.<br />

5. Describe how composting can be done on a small scale.<br />

OVERVIEW<br />

Is organic farming a new method of growing crops or an ancient practice? Like many<br />

b<strong>and</strong>wagon terms, such as biotechnology, there is always the question of novelty.<br />

The term has gained prominence in society in the face of a strong move toward healthy<br />

eating <strong>and</strong> environmental protection. Organic farming is certainly not a new method of<br />

growing crops. In fact, it is as old as agriculture itself. To appreciate the resurgence into<br />

the limelight of organic farming, it is important to underst<strong>and</strong> how it differs from modern<br />

methods of cultivation. Modern methods of plant cultivation are greatly influenced by<br />

technological advancements that enable scientists to duplicate or mimic natural<br />

conditions. To qualify as an organic producer, one must be duly certified by the state after<br />

complying with certain st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

The fundamental differences between the two systems of plant production lie in<br />

the ways in which plants receive nutrition <strong>and</strong> protection from diseases <strong>and</strong> pests in cultivation.<br />

However, what launched organic farming into the limelight were the side<br />

effects of modern crop production practices on the general environment. Natural<br />
