Pruning cuts: (a) Proper way and position to cut a limb. (b) Improper procedure (cutting
from the top first) used in cutting a large limb can result in a snap and tear of the bark (c)
Variety of cuts (from left to right): cut is too close to the bud; angle of cut is too steep and
too close to the bud; cut is a good distance from bud, but better to be slanted than flush; a
snapped branch. Steps in cutting a large limb: (d1) The first cut is always from the bottom
(undercut). (d2) The second cut is from the top and to the side of the first cut away
from the trunk to remove the limb. (d3) The third cut is used to remove the stump. (d4)
A clean cut close to the collar of the limb is desired. (Sources: (a,d) © Dorling Kindersley;
