Ο Αλέξανδρος και η Μαριάννα Καψιμάλη
έχουν μεγαλώσει στη Σαντορίνη, με κοινά
βιώματα και εικόνες που τους βοηθούν να
έχουν μία ξεχωριστή ταυτότητα στα κτήρια
που αναλαμβάνουν. Ολοκλήρωσαν τις
σπουδές στους στην Αρχιτεκτονική Σχολή
του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου,
συνεχίζοντας με μεταπτυχιακά στη Γλασκώβη
η Μαριάννα, όπου εξειδικεύθηκε
στο Interior Design, και στη Ζυρίχη ο Αλέξανδρος
με εξειδίκευση στην Κατοίκηση
και το Πολεοδομικό Σχέδιο. Από το 2012
έχουν δημιουργήσει αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο
όπου αλληλοσυμπληρώνουν τις απόψεις
τους περί σχεδιασμού και πράξης στην κατασκευή.
«Το επάγγελμά μας είναι δημιουργικό,
εξωστρεφές και κοινωνικό και ήρθε σαν
φυσική εξέλιξη η ενασχόλησή μας με αυτό».
Θεωρούν ότι η Σαντορίνη αυτή την περίοδο
έχει μία ανοδική πορεία με αντίκτυπο στον
κλάδο τους με θετικές αλλά και αρνητικές
επιπτώσεις. Αυτό που δείχνει να τους προβληματίζει
περισσότερο είναι η αλλαγή στην
κοινωνική ζωή του νησιού. «Δεν υπάρχει πια
η απλή και αυθεντική ζωή του νησιού. Χρειάζεται
άμεσα η ανάλυση των σημερινών δεδομένων
και αριθμών, καθώς και η πρόβλεψη
και μελέτη για το πώς θα απορροφηθούν τα
μεγάλα κύματα τουρισμού, ώστε να διασωθεί
η ταυτότητα της Σαντορίνης».
Η αρχιτεκτονική τους προσέγγιση αναφέρεται
σε κτήρια γήινα και εναρμονισμένα με το
φυσικό περιβάλλον. Ξεχωριστή αίσθηση και
πηγή έμπνευσης είναι «ένα αιωρούμενο σχεδόν,
λευκό μπαλκόνι σε απόκρημνη πλευρά
της καλντέρας που αντιτίθεται στο σκοτεινό
και λαξευμένο στη γη υπόσκαφο» μας λέει
ο Αλέξανδρος. Η Μαριάννα από την άλλη
πλευρά «αναζητά την αίσθηση που προσφέρει
ο καθαρός βορεινός αέρας στη βόρεια
πλευρά του νησιού, που ατενίζει τη θάλασσα
σαν πλώρη ενός καραβιού». Για το μέλλον
ελπίζουν σε περισσότερους δημόσιους χώρους-πλατείες
και πολιτιστικά κτίρια, ώστε
να ενισχυθεί η κοινωνική και πολιτιστική
ταυτότητα του τόπου.
Alexandros and Marianna Kapsimalis have
grown up in Santorini with common experiences
and images, and have developed this
special connection that helps them put their
own aesthetic touch on the projects they undertake.
They have grown up in Fira and left
to study Architecture at the National Technical
University of Athens. Marianna received
her MSc in Glasgow, where she specialized
in Interior Design, and Alexandros in Zurich,
specializing in Residential and Urban Planning.
They have been working in the same
office since 2012, complementing each other
with their designs and perspectives. “Our profession
is creative, extrovert and social, and
comes as a natural continuation of ourselves”.
In their daily life, “there is a very good sibling
relationship; we work together with love and
understanding, and therefore all obstacles
are overcome with trust and honesty”. They
consider the development of Santorini to be
natural “since it has always been on the rise”.
“Today there are more projects although
this also has its negative aspects”. What
seems to be of more concern to them is the
change in the island’s social life. “There is no
longer the simple life of the island of the past,
when people would get together in houses,
squares and veggheras (gathering with family
and friends). Now, one has the feeling
that the island is urbanized”. And what can
we do about this? “It is necessary to foresee,
estimate and analyze how the big waves of
tourism will be controlled, so as to preserve
Santorini’s identity”. They describe their aesthetic
perspective as “earthy buildings with
free lines”. As for the architectural challenges
they meet in Santorini: “a balcony in the caldera
magnetizes with the feeling of hanging
above the sea, with its incredible view, which
comes into contrast with the dark, carved in
the rock yposkafa” says Alexander. Marianna,
on the other hand, seeks inspiration on the
north side of Oia, which faces the sea like a
ship’s bow “where the refreshing breeze coming
from the sea is such a revitalizing sensation”.
For the future, they would like to see
“less urban construction, stricter rules, more
public and cultural buildings, more qualitative
social life with people going back to the
original island life and gathering on squares,
to reinforce Santorini’s social and cultural
identity”. And this is certainly something we
should all look forward to!
