Eίναι δύσκολο να φανταστεί
κανείς ότι στον βράχο του
Σκάρου στο Ημεροβίγλι
κάποτε ήταν χτισμένη μια
ολόκληρη καστροπολιτεία
με καλντερίμια, σπίτια και
εκκλησίες. Το καστέλι του
Σκάρου είναι το πιο παλιό
της Σαντορίνης, αλλά σήμερα
δεν σώζεται τίποτα που να
θυμίζει την παλιά αίγλη του.
Ο μόνος μάρτυρας για την
εικόνα του Σκάρου είναι το
σχέδιο σε μολύβι από τη
συλλογή του Thomas Hope
που βρίσκεται στο μουσείο
Μπενάκη και αποδίδεται
στον L.S. Fauvel. Το καστέλι
του Σκάρου χτίστηκε μεταξύ
του 1205 και 1230 και λέγεται
ότι καταστράφηκε από
σεισμό και εγκαταλείφθηκε
σταδιακά. Οι κάτοικοι
μετοίκησαν στα Φηρά. Ο
σημερινός επισκέπτης του
Σκάρου απολαμβάνει τη
φανταστική θέα, ενώ το
μοναδικό οίκημα που υπάρχει
στο κάποτε απόρθητο
φρούριο είναι η εκκλησία της
Παναγίας Θεοσκέπαστης.
Whether looking over Skaros
from some point of the caldera
or being at its top, it is
hard to imagine that an entire
castle-city was built on this
rock with tortuous narrow
cobbled streets, houses and
churches. Skaros casteli is
the oldest casteli in Santorini,
but today there is nothing
reminding of its medieval
prestige. The only testimonial
for what the casteli of
Skaros looked like is a pencil
sketch from the collection
of Thomas Hope exhibited
at the Benaki Museum, the
design of the casteli being
attributed to L.S. Fauvel. It
was built between 1205 and
1230, but was destroyed by
the earthquake and gradually
abandoned. The visitor today
can enjoy the fantastic view
offered by the location.
The only structure remaining
today at Skaros where once
the impregnable fortress used
to be erected is the church
of ‘Virgin Mary the
Theoskepasti’.
