ΑΡΧΑΙΑ ΘΗΡΑ
ANCIENT THERA
Μετά την καταστροφή του
Ακρωτηρίου η Θήρα έµεινε
σχεδόν ακατοίκητη µέχρι
τον 8ο π.Χ. αιώνα. Τότε
έφθασαν εδώ άποικοι από
τη Σπάρτη, µε αρχηγό τον
Θήρα. Στην κορυφή του
Μέσα Βουνού χτίστηκε η
πόλη, που συνδέθηκε οδικώς
µε τα δύο λιµάνια της, την
Οία (σηµερινό Καµάρι) και
την Ελευσίνα (σηµερινή
Περίσσα). Από τον 4ο π.Χ.
αιώνα η πόλη αναπτύσσεται,
περνάει στη σφαίρα
επιρροής των Πτολεµαίων
και µετά καταλαµβάνεται
από τους Ρωµαίους.
Παρακµάζει µετά τον 3ο µ.Χ.
αιώνα και µετά τον 9ο αι.
εγκαταλείπεται.
Eπίσκεψη: Πολύς αέρας και
όµορφη θέα. Πλησιάζοντας
συναντάτε λαξεύµατα, στα
πλάγια των δρόµων. Είναι τα
νεκροταφεία, έξω από τον
οικισµό, διότι θεωρούσαν
µίασµα τους τάφους
µέσα στην πόλη. Στην
είσοδο συναντάτε ερείπια
αρχαίων ιερών και δύο
µικρούς βυζαντινούς ναούς.
Συνεχίζοντας, θα δείτε
δεξιά σας το τέµενος του
Μικρασιάτη Αρτεµιδώρου,
που έφτασε εδώ οδηγηµένος
από τα όνειρά του. Φτάνετε
στην αγορά της πόλης, που
θυµίζει τις πιάτσες των
κυκλαδίτικων χωριών. Δεξιά
σας η Βασιλική Στοά και
µπροστά και αριστερά το
θέατρο και οι δρόµοι της
πόλης. Σχεδόν όλα είναι
ελληνιστικής-ρωµαϊκής
εποχής (3ος-2ος αι. π.Χ.).
Once Akrotiri was destroyed,
Thera remained uninhabited
until the 8th century B.C.
Then Dorian colonists from
Sparta arrived. Their leader
was Theras. The city was built
on the western slope of the
mountain called Mesa Vouno
and remained without walls
due to its natural fortified
position and was connected
by a road with its two ports,
Oia (Kamari today) and Elefsis
(Perissa today). Very few
traces have been found of the
initial phase of the city. After
the 4th century B.C., the city
developed under the influence
of the Ptolemies, Greek
monarchs of Egypt. Later it
was occupied by the Romans.
The city deteriorated after
the 3rd century A.D. and was
abandoned after the 9th century.
Visiting Ancient Thera:
Get ready for a lot of wind.
When approaching, you will
see many carved rocks. These
are the cemeteries, located
outside the settlement because
the presence of the dead in
the city was regarded as infection.
At the entrance of the
settlement, there are ruins of
ancient temples and two small
Byzantine churches. On your
right, you will see the shrine
of Artemidoros, a priest from
Asia Minor. Guided by his
dreams, he came to Thera and
founded a shrine. The Agora is
reminiscent of squares in Cycladic
villages. On your right
stands the Royal Portico and,
ahead on your left, is the City
Theatre. Most of those belong
to the 3rd and the 2nd c. B.C.
