Καστέλι σημαίνει<br />
κάστρο. Τα καστέλια της<br />
Σαντορίνης χτίστηκαν<br />
από τον 13ο έως τον 16ο<br />
αιώνα, την περίοδο της<br />
Ενετοκρατίας στο νησί.<br />
‘Casteli’ means ‘small<br />
castle’. They were built<br />
in <strong>Santorini</strong> by the Latin<br />
colonists of the island<br />
during the period of<br />
Venetocracy (13th-16th<br />
centuries).<br />

Οία σήμερα σώζεται<br />
ένα κομμάτι του γουλά.<br />
Πήρε το όνομά του από<br />
υπόσκαφη εκκλησία<br />
αφιερωμένη στον άγιο<br />
Νικόλαο και χτίστηκε<br />
γύρω στο 1450. To κάστρο<br />
της Οίας, όπως το λένε<br />
σήμερα, είναι ίσως το<br />
πιο διάσημο σημείο του<br />
νησιού. Στους τοίχους<br />
του καταφθάνουν κάθε<br />
απόγευμα άνθρωποι απ’<br />
όλο τον κόσμο για να δουν<br />
το ηλιοβασίλεμα. Απ’ αυτό<br />
το ίδιο σημείο όπου οι<br />
Σαντορινιοί έβλεπαν τους<br />
πειρατές να πλησιάζουν.<br />
What has remained today<br />
from the casteli of Saint<br />
Nikolaos is one part of its<br />
gulas. It was built around<br />
1450 and named after<br />
the church carved in rocks<br />
dedicated to Saint Nikolaos.<br />
This spot of the Oia castle is<br />
probably the most famous<br />
site on the island. Every<br />
evening people from all<br />
over the world come here<br />
to admire the sunset. It is<br />
exactly the same spot from<br />
where the <strong>Santorini</strong>ans were<br />
keeping a watchful eye on<br />
pirates for three<br />
whole centuries<br />
(15th-18th century).<br />

‘Gulas’ is the defensive<br />
fortress, the highest<br />
tower of every casteli.<br />

<strong>Santorini</strong> had 5 castelia<br />
and 4 gulas.<br />
Το παλιότερο καστέλι<br />
είναι του Σκάρου στο<br />
Ημεροβίγλι και το<br />
νεότερο το καστέλι του<br />
Πύργου.<br />
The oldest castle is<br />
Skaros in Imerovigli and<br />
the most recent, the<br />
castle of Pyrgos village.<br />
Έξω από κάθε καστέλι<br />
υπάρχει εκκλησία<br />
αφιερωμένη στην αγία<br />
Θεοδοσία.<br />
Αt the front of every<br />
casteli there is a church<br />
dedicated to Saint<br />
Theodosia.<br />
