India does not have a uniform citation st<strong>and</strong>ard, <strong>and</strong> citation practices vary considerably among<br />

authors.<br />

1.0 Constitution<br />

Cite the Constitution by title (“Constitution of India, 1950” or “CONSITUTION OF INDIA,<br />

1950”), followed by “art” <strong>and</strong> article referenced. A less official, abbreviated title may also be<br />

used:<br />

Cite the Government of India Act by title, year (in parentheses), <strong>and</strong> passage referenced:<br />

2.0 Legislation<br />

Citation of legislation varies across authors. Typically, cite legislation by section (“s.”, “S.” or<br />

“Sec.”), order (“O.”) or rule (“R.”) referenced, official title, <strong>and</strong> year. Alternatively, cite<br />

legislation by section (“s.”, “S.” or “Sec.”), order (“O.”) or rule (“R.”) referenced, official title,<br />

act number, <strong>and</strong> year:<br />

R. 2, Code of Civil Procedure, Act No. 5 of 1908<br />

Cite presidential ordinances by passage referenced, official title, <strong>and</strong> year. If desired, “No.”<br />

followed by ordinance number <strong>and</strong> “of” may be inserted between title <strong>and</strong> year:<br />

S. 4, Arbitration <strong>and</strong> Conciliation Ordinance, 1996.<br />

There is no uniform system of referring <strong>to</strong> delegated legislation in India, <strong>and</strong> citation forms vary<br />

dramatically. Legislation may be cited by abbreviated description of the legislation, title of the<br />

law or issuing authority, <strong>and</strong> publication in which the legislation is contained (Gazette of India,<br />

abbreviated GAZ. INDIA, or State Government page) by volume, title, page, <strong>and</strong> place <strong>and</strong> date<br />
