1.0 Basic Treaties<br />

Since most of the Articles in the Treaties have been renumbered, it is important <strong>to</strong> determine<br />

which numbering system is used in a particular citation. A list of current <strong>and</strong> corresponding<br />

prior article numbers for the EU <strong>and</strong> EC treaties is located at http://curia.eu.int/en/. Click on<br />

“Index,” then on “Citation,” <strong>and</strong> finally on “Articles of the EC Treaty” <strong>and</strong> “Articles of the<br />

Treaty on EU” as appropriate.<br />

1.1 Treaties as they st<strong>and</strong> after May 1, 1999.<br />

Cite <strong>to</strong> the current Treaties by “Article”, article referenced, <strong>and</strong> abbreviated title of the Treaty:<br />

The abbreviations for the major treaties are:<br />

Treaty on European Union: EU<br />

EC Treaty: EC<br />

ECSC Treaty: CS<br />

Eura<strong>to</strong>m Treaty: EA<br />

1.2 Treaties as they s<strong>to</strong>od before May 1, 1999<br />

Cite <strong>to</strong> the Treaties as they s<strong>to</strong>od before May 1, 1999 by “Article”, article referenced, the words<br />

“of the”, <strong>and</strong> abbreviated treaty name:<br />

Article 85 of the EC Treaty.<br />

Cite the EC Treaty <strong>and</strong> the Treaty on the European Union as they s<strong>to</strong>od before May 1, 1999 by<br />

the above form followed by a reference <strong>to</strong> the corresponding provision of the current version of<br />

the Treaty including, if appropriate, an indication that the article has been amended or repealed<br />

(in parentheses):<br />

Thus, cite an article not amended by the Treaty of Amsterdam as follows:<br />

Article 85 of the EC Treaty (now Article 81 EC).<br />

Cite an article amended by the Treaty of Amsterdam as follows:<br />

Article 51 of the EC Treaty (now, after amendment, Article 42 EC).<br />

Cite an article repealed by the Treaty of Amsterdam as follows:<br />

Article 53 of the EC Treaty (repealed by the Treaty of Amsterdam).<br />

An exception is made for the initial citation <strong>to</strong> former articles 117 <strong>to</strong> 120 of the EC Treaty, which<br />

have been replaced en bloc by the Treaty of Amsterdam. Cite these articles as follows:
