The group’s jazz used authentic African sounds (including chants) <strong>and</strong> instruments.<br />

It’s almost entirely improvised, <strong>and</strong> their performances provided a<br />

spectacle, with b<strong>and</strong> members painting their faces <strong>and</strong> wearing loose clothes<br />

made from African-print fabrics. Balanced on the cutting edge of ’60s <strong>and</strong> ’70s<br />

jazz, the ensemble’s music was also rooted deep in Africa.<br />

Tutankhamun (Black Lion) embodies their early (circa-1969) music.<br />

Paul Bley<br />

On piano, Paul Bley (born 1932) plays a lighter, dreamier style of jazz than his<br />

peers. Early on, Bley played with 1950s cool <strong>and</strong> hard-bop musicians such as<br />

trumpeter Chet Baker <strong>and</strong> saxophonist Jackie McLean, but by the 1960s, Bley<br />

left those structures to explore largely improvised jazz.<br />

Anthony Braxton<br />

With his cardigan sweaters <strong>and</strong> wire-rimmed glasses, Anthony Braxton<br />

(born 1945) looks like a college math professor, <strong>and</strong> his music is as perplexing<br />

as advanced calculus. Sometimes Braxton played unaccompanied <strong>and</strong><br />

other times he composed epic works — symphonic in their precision <strong>and</strong><br />
