Project Description:
The primary objective of this research is to better understand integral abutment bridge (IAB) structural performance from the perspective of
superstructure behavior. The research approach consists of a combination of literature review / DOT surveys, analytical modeling of IAB structural
systems, and field monitoring of IABs, in hopes of ultimately providing improved design and construction details for IAB superstructures,
consistent with actual stress distributions observed in the field. This could then lead to expanded use of IAB structures that are more optimized with
respect to their superstructures, while still providing all the benefits of a joint-free bridge. Deeper understanding of IABs developed in this research
may also be valuable in related investigations of seismic behavior, design, and performance of IAB structures.
Meeting Dates - Minutes Available?
Progress & Significant Results This Quarter:
Ironed out all of the budgetary and other initial project planning issues during this quarter, including preparing the companion work plan & budget
for the expanded project scope partially funded by the Illinois Tollway. Recruited graduate research assistants to work on the project, and then
began work on Task 1 ("Literature Search").
Anticipated Work Next Quarter:
Continue conducting & reporting on the work comprising Task 1.1 ("Literature Review of Prior Research") & Task 1.2 ("DOT Survey of Design &
Construction Practices"). Hold the first project TRP meeting. Meet with structural engineering design consultants from IDOT and/or the Illinois
