Progress & Significant Results This Quarter:
TASK 1- Literature Review
This task has been completed.
TASK 2- Field Data Survey and Analysis
This task has been completed.
TASK 3- Laboratory Experiment Program
This task has been completed.
The following candidate mixes were selected for lab testing:
- Dense-graded HMA with steel slag (control)
- Stone mastic asphalt with steel slag (control)
- HMA with quartzite
- 4.75 SMA-graded HMA
- Fiber reinforced HMA with steel slag
- Sprinkle treatment
The following lab tests were conducted for the considered mixes:
- Raveling, rutting, fracture, dynamic modulus, and moisture susceptibility
- The lab tests have been conducted for the lab-mixed / lab-compacted (LMLC) and plant-mixed/ lab-compacted (PMLC) specimens.
- Rutting and fracture tests have been conducted on field cores which were taken right after construction and after four months.
TASK 4- Field Testing
Rut depths were collected at each section using the walking inclinometer (Dipstick). In addition, friction, surface texture and noise measurements
were conducted.
Field testing was performed four times with approximately four-month intervals; which include November 2010, April 2011, July 2011, and
November 2011. Additional friction testing was conducted in September 2011 to verify earlier testing results.
Additional noise measurement will be conducted in April 2012. Pavement surface temperature correction factor will be obtained from
measurements at two different pavement surface temperatures.
TASK 5- Engineering Benefit Analysis
This task is underway.
The cost data has been updated, and cost analysis is being performed.
TASK 6- Final <strong>Report</strong>
This task is underway.
Two reports will be published.
- Volume 1 includes mix design and laboratory testing, and volume 2 which will include field construction and field testing as well as engineering
benefit analysis.
- The Volume 1 is being finalized and the draft of the Volume 2 is being prepared.
Anticipated Work Next Quarter:
The engineering benefit analysis will be finalized.
The volume 1 of the project report will be finalized and the draft of the volume 2 will be completed.
Project Impediments & Recommended Solutions:
The noise measurements in Novemeber 2011 appeared to be inaccurate. Measurements of the friction and further analysis revealed that one
measurement was questionable per further data analyses and discussions between IDOT and the research team.
