<strong>Progress</strong> & Significant Results This Quarter:<br />

TASK 1- Literature Review<br />

This task has been completed.<br />

TASK 2- Field Data Survey and Analysis<br />

This task has been completed.<br />

TASK 3- Laboratory Experiment Program<br />

This task has been completed.<br />

The following candidate mixes were selected for lab testing:<br />

- Dense-graded HMA with steel slag (c<strong>on</strong>trol)<br />

- St<strong>on</strong>e mastic asphalt with steel slag (c<strong>on</strong>trol)<br />

- HMA with quartzite<br />

- 4.75 SMA-graded HMA<br />

- Fiber reinforced HMA with steel slag<br />

- Sprinkle treatment<br />

The following lab tests were c<strong>on</strong>ducted for the c<strong>on</strong>sidered mixes:<br />

- Raveling, rutting, fracture, dynamic modulus, and moisture susceptibility<br />

- The lab tests have been c<strong>on</strong>ducted for the lab-mixed / lab-compacted (LMLC) and plant-mixed/ lab-compacted (PMLC) specimens.<br />

- Rutting and fracture tests have been c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>on</strong> field cores which were taken right after c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and after four m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

TASK 4- Field Testing<br />

Rut depths were collected at each secti<strong>on</strong> using the walking inclinometer (Dipstick). In additi<strong>on</strong>, fricti<strong>on</strong>, surface texture and noise measurements<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>ducted.<br />

Field testing was performed four times with approximately four-m<strong>on</strong>th intervals; which include November 2010, April 2011, July 2011, and<br />

November 2011. Additi<strong>on</strong>al fricti<strong>on</strong> testing was c<strong>on</strong>ducted in September 2011 to verify earlier testing results.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>al noise measurement will be c<strong>on</strong>ducted in April 2012. Pavement surface temperature correcti<strong>on</strong> factor will be obtained from<br />

measurements at two different pavement surface temperatures.<br />

TASK 5- Engineering Benefit Analysis<br />

This task is underway.<br />

The cost data has been updated, and cost analysis is being performed.<br />

TASK 6- Final <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

This task is underway.<br />

Two reports will be published.<br />

- Volume 1 includes mix design and laboratory testing, and volume 2 which will include field c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and field testing as well as engineering<br />

benefit analysis.<br />

- The Volume 1 is being finalized and the draft of the Volume 2 is being prepared.<br />

Anticipated Work Next Quarter:<br />

The engineering benefit analysis will be finalized.<br />

The volume 1 of the project report will be finalized and the draft of the volume 2 will be completed.<br />

Project Impediments & Recommended Soluti<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

The noise measurements in Novemeber 2011 appeared to be inaccurate. Measurements of the fricti<strong>on</strong> and further analysis revealed that <strong>on</strong>e<br />

measurement was questi<strong>on</strong>able per further data analyses and discussi<strong>on</strong>s between IDOT and the research team.<br />
