Progress & Significant Results This Quarter: Task 2. Literature Review Internet queries have been conducted using the Transportation Research Board (TRB), TRIS, and other search engines to obtain relevant journal papers pertaining to right turn islands. The research team has assembled a list of references and reviewed 25 papers. 19 of these papers are somewhat relevant to this study and have been reviewed further. Summaries of the initial review are being prepared and will be presented to the TRP in April at the next progress meeting. Task 3. Identify Candidate Control Sites and Finalize Experimental Plans The characteristics of all 10 test sites have been reviewed and approximate matches have been found for some of the sites. The control sites that are paired with the test sites are being reviewed and compared to make sure that the best possible pairs are selected. All of the control sites are located within the Peoria and Bloomington/Normal areas. Characteristics being observed are laneage, ADT, curb radius, intersection skew, right turn skew (from car placed at appropriate location), speed limit, right turn channelization, intersection configuration, right turn downstream characteristics, angle required to view downstream traffic, and others. Task 4. Collect and Analyze Operational and Traffic Conflict Data More after data will be collected beginning in May 2012. Task 5. Collect and Analyze Traffic Crash Data A statewide traffic crash query was conducted to identify locations with 5 or more right-turn related crashes in 2009 and 2010. 99 approaches from 2009 and 104 approaches from 2010 were determined to have five or more right-turn related crashes. A total of 131 unique approaches from both the 2009 and 2010 query were selected for further analysis. The geometric characteristics, including location, operation, traffic control, laneage, intersection skew, right-turn skew, volumes, speed limits, channelization, auxiliary lanes, right-turn downstream characteristics, pedestrian information, and other relative information was gathered for all 131 unique approaches. A site specific crash analysis will also be conducted for these locations to confirm the results. At the next progress meeting in April, a list of locations will be presented so that the panel can select a sample for the research team to investigate further. The research team currently has access to crash data through October 2011. Crash data for the before and part of the after periods for those Peoria area sites that have already had improvements installed will begin to be collected and analyzed in the coming months. Task 6. Mid-Project and <strong>Quarterly</strong> Meetings The first mid-project meeting will take place in April 2012. The findings from the initial statewide traffic crash queries will be presented and a list of sites to investigate further will be established. Anticipated Work Next Quarter: Task 2. Literature Review Draft summaries of the literature review will be prepared next quarter and will be used to establish a section of the final report. Task 3. Identify Candidate Control Sites and Finalize Experimental Plans The selection of control sites for the crash analysis will be finalized. The experimental plans have already been finalized. Page 2 of 3 Task 4. Collect and Analyze Operational and Traffic Conflict Data Additional video data will be collected. We will begin to analyze the data for various MOE's including traffic conflicts, delay, pedestrian conflicts, right turning driver behaviors, traffic volumes, headway, and gap acceptance. Task 5. Collect and Analyze Traffic Crash Data Once the TRP has reviewed and finalized the list of locations to be included in the contributing factor study, site specific crash analysis will be conducted for these locations. The research team currently has access to crash data through May 2011 and is working on obtaining June thru October of 2011. Crash data for the 87

Project Impediments & Recommended Solutions: A revised time schedule was prepared to account for the additional scope added to the project at the kick-off meeting on 10-11-11 under Task 5 - to perform statewide traffic crash queries and identify contributing factors of right turn related crashes at signalized intersections.
