In addition to development/improvement of existing design methods, special attention is being given to improvement of field and laboratory testing methods for characterizing the in situ condition of weak shale in Illinois including shear strength and compressibility. For the purpose of this project, weak shale is defined as Intermediate Geologic Material (IGM) with unconfined compressive strength of 10 ksf to 100 ksf. These improvements are anticipated to lead to safer design and substantial cost savings for IDOT.
