Progress & Significant Results This Quarter:
1. The input data needed for Highway Safety Manual have been identified.
2. IDOT GIS database and NAVTAQ database were collected.
3. Research team examined the attributes of the road features in IDOT GIS database to understand which variables are available for the HSM model
requirements.
4. Preliminary tests on how to estimate some variables, such as curve radius, slope, etc. using ArcGIS software suite have been conducted.
5. A survey questionnaire on highway roadside feature data collection was developed.
6. An extensive literature on highway inventory data collection methods was conducted.
7. The field tests were conducted on recorded GPS data to investigate the capabilities of extracting roadway data from geo-referenced video for
input into the HSM models.
8. Other methods, including terrestrial laser scanning, photogrammetric methods, organized mobile LiDAR, were tested in the field.
9. A sample mobile LiDAR dataset was acquired from the Woolpert.
10. Other data sources for school locations and liquor sale store locations were identified.
Anticipated Work Next Quarter:
1. A nationwide survey will be conducted.
2. More methods will be tested in the field and labs.
3. The results of Tasks 1-4 of the Phase I project will be presented at the next TRP meeting on May 2nd, 2012.
