<strong>Quarterly</strong> Progress <strong>Report</strong> Meeting Dates - Minutes Available? 3/15/2011 - Yes 6/27/2012 - Yes Progress & Significant Results This Quarter: Project team completed the following tasks this Quarter: (a) Reviewed recently completed and ongoing research on drilled shafts in shales, such as NCHRP Synthesis 360, Prediction of Ultimate Side Shear for Drilled Shafts in Missouri Shale, AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications, FHWA GEC 010, CDOT-DTD-2005, and other published technical literature. (b) Reviewed current IDOT practice for design of drilled shafts in weak shales. This includes reviewing original papers and evaluating their suggested design correlations using our load test database by comparing Mean and COV of ratio of predicted capacity to measured capacity. (c) Developed preliminary (tentative) design correlations: the research team used regression analyses and statistical methods to develop coefficients for design methods based on new load test data. (d) Project team investigated effects of drilled shaft diameter, socket length, shale mass modulus, and constant normal stiffness on load transfer mechanism for drilled shafts in weak shale. (e) Make recommendations for future IDOT sampling and site exploration procedures involving weak shales. (f) Developed correlations between shale shear strength and SPT values to facilitate drilled shaft design using blowcount values as suggested by CDOT SPT based design procedure (CDOT-DTD-R-2005-4). Anticipated Work Next Quarter: Our planned activities for next quarter are summarized below: A) Subsurface investigation at one (1) IDOT bridge location that has utilized drilled shafts in weak shales will be conducted to obtain higher quality and additional design information for shale. B) Review ongoing research on drilled shafts in weak shale: the research team will continue its review and assessment of ongoing research on drilled shafts in shale and pursue additional published literature. C) Development of correlations between engineering properties for small- and large-scale weak shale samples. D) Development of load-displacement (t-z and q-z) relationships for drilled shafts in weak shale to investigate effects of shaft vertical movement on mobilized side and end resistance. E) Development of semi-empirical capacity correlations by modifying the Hoek-Brown (1980) Failure Criterion and validating it using available load test data for drilled shafts in weak shale. F) Analyze one (1) IDOT bridge location using current IDOT procedures for drilled shaft design in weak shale and new data on shale properties obtained during the proposed subsurface investigations. The same project sites will be analyzed using design correlations developed by the research team. Project Impediments & Recommended Solutions: (a) Mobilization of subsurface investigation at one (1) IDOT bridge location that utilized drilled shaft due to equipment availability and staffing. Recommended solution is to locate another bridge that will require less traffic control staff. (b) Project team developed preliminary design correlations for side and end resistance of drilled shafts in weak shale. (c) Project team developed relations between SPT blowcounts and weak shale shear strength. The optimum tack coat application rates, which maximize the shear strengths of HMA-HMA interfaces, will be determined. Testing specimens will be prepared using various HMA (surface mix and binder mix) and various tack coat materials (including straight asphalt, emulsions and non-track tack coat). The effect of the surface texture of the underlying HMA (milled and unmilled) will also be evaluated. In addition, the appropriate field application equipment will be evaluated and modified if necessary and validated through field study that will consider the performance and cost effectiveness of tack coat application.
