Project Descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />
R27-99 is developing state-specific correlati<strong>on</strong>s for design of drilled shafts founded in <strong>Illinois</strong> weak shale. In additi<strong>on</strong> to development/improvement<br />
of existing design methods, special attenti<strong>on</strong> is being given to improvement of field and laboratory testing methods for characterizing the in situ<br />
c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of weak shale in <strong>Illinois</strong> including shear strength and compressibility. For the purpose of this project, weak shale is defined as<br />
Intermediate Geologic Material (IGM) with unc<strong>on</strong>fined compressive strength of 10 ksf to 100 ksf. These improvements are anticipated to lead to<br />
safer design and substantial cost savings for IDOT.<br />
