Northern Student Movement, and worked as a<br />

community organizer in a Saul Alinsky-style War<br />

on Poverty program. Then, moving from the<br />

streets to the suites, Schechter served as an<br />

assistant to the Mayor of Detroit in 1966 on a Ford<br />

Foundation grant.<br />

Schechter joined the start-up staff at CNN as a<br />

producer based in Atlanta. He then moved to ABC<br />

as a producer for 20/20, where during his eight<br />

years he won two National News Emmys.<br />

an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of<br />

Journalism at Columbia University.<br />

Before becoming a consultant, Sutton – an<br />

award-winning editor and designer – worked for<br />

daily and Sunday newspapers in his native<br />

Britain, and was executive editor of Drum magazine<br />

in South Africa (where he was also a consultant<br />

to the apartheid-era alternative press). He<br />

moved to North America in 1990 to become<br />

design director of Toronto’s Globe and Mail, later<br />

joining Thomson Newspapers as head of design<br />

for its North American operation before becoming<br />

a newspaper consultant.<br />

Sutton also spent five years as editor of Design<br />

magazine, the quarterly publication of the U.S.based<br />

international Society for News Design.<br />

He is the author of Creative Newspaper Design<br />

and Creative Magazine Design. ●<br />
