Northern Student Movement, and worked as a
community organizer in a Saul Alinsky-style War
on Poverty program. Then, moving from the
streets to the suites, Schechter served as an
assistant to the Mayor of Detroit in 1966 on a Ford
Foundation grant.
Schechter joined the start-up staff at CNN as a
producer based in Atlanta. He then moved to ABC
as a producer for 20/20, where during his eight
years he won two National News Emmys.

Before becoming a consultant, Sutton – an
award-winning editor and designer – worked for
daily and Sunday newspapers in his native
Britain, and was executive editor of Drum magazine
in South Africa (where he was also a consultant
to the apartheid-era alternative press). He
moved to North America in 1990 to become
design director of Toronto’s Globe and Mail, later
joining Thomson Newspapers as head of design
for its North American operation before becoming
a newspaper consultant.
Sutton also spent five years as editor of Design
magazine, the quarterly publication of the U.S.based
international Society for News Design.
He is the author of Creative Newspaper Design
and Creative Magazine Design. ●
