• Tournaments range <strong>in</strong> size depend<strong>in</strong>g on the age group play<strong>in</strong>g, location, organizer<br />

<strong>and</strong> other factors. The largest tournaments typically attract up to 64 teams <strong>and</strong> last<br />

two to three days.<br />

• A typical AAU Basketball season runs from March through May, with qualify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tournaments occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> May or June <strong>and</strong> the national tournament occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> July<br />

or August. Recent national tournament locations <strong>in</strong>clude Orl<strong>and</strong>o, Memphis, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia<br />

Beach <strong>and</strong> Detroit. <strong>Coeur</strong> d’Alene would be unlikely to attract a national AAU<br />

Basketball championship game <strong>in</strong> the future as they typically go to larger markets.<br />

USA Gymnastics<br />

• A new facility <strong>in</strong> <strong>Coeur</strong> d’Alene would have the potential to attract state, regional <strong>and</strong><br />

national gymnastics competitions.<br />

• A local gym <strong>and</strong>/or group (such as Funtastics) would need to organize competitions<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to supply equipment, staff<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other support.<br />

• State gymnastics meet organizers <strong>in</strong>dicated that they have typically not had to pay<br />

rent for the host facility <strong>in</strong> years past <strong>and</strong> would expect the same from a venue <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Coeur</strong> d’Alene.<br />

• The state meet is typically held <strong>in</strong> the first week of April, with the boys meet last<strong>in</strong>g<br />

one to two days <strong>and</strong> the girls meet last<strong>in</strong>g three days due to the significantly higher<br />

number of female competitors. It is estimated that approximately 100 boys <strong>and</strong> 300<br />

girls compete <strong>in</strong> the state meet. Past event organizers estimate that approximately<br />

four people per competitors travel to the competition site.<br />

• Approximately 16,000 to 20,000 square feet of contiguous flat floor space is needed,<br />

plus some additional space for athletes to warm up without <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g compet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

athletes.<br />

• Regional <strong>and</strong> national competitions do not have boys <strong>and</strong> girls compet<strong>in</strong>g at the same<br />

venue. These events typically have 500 to 800 athletes compet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> require seat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for 3,000 to 4,000 spectators at the national events.<br />

• National events generate between 200 <strong>and</strong> 500 peak hotel room nights at an average<br />

daily rate of approximately $110 <strong>and</strong> last five to six days.<br />

• National events typically occur <strong>in</strong> June or July; regional events occur <strong>in</strong> May <strong>and</strong><br />

state competitions occur <strong>in</strong> March or April.<br />

• An opportunity also exists to host a gymnastics tradeshow featur<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for<br />

coaches, market<strong>in</strong>g sem<strong>in</strong>ars, apparel sales <strong>and</strong> other similar events. This typically<br />

lasts three or four days <strong>and</strong> attracts 400 to 500 people.<br />
