<strong>IEEE</strong> Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award<br />

Nomination Deadline - 31 January<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>IEEE</strong> Graduate Teaching Award is a<br />

Technical Field Award established by<br />

the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors in 1990 and<br />

renamed in honor <strong>of</strong> Leon K. Kirchmayer<br />

in 2002. Dr. Kirchmayer was well<br />

known and revered throughout the<br />

world for his commitment to students<br />

and education.<br />

This award honors teachers <strong>of</strong> electrical<br />

and electronics engineering and the<br />

related disciplines, ‘for inspirational teaching <strong>of</strong><br />

graduate students in the <strong>IEEE</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> interest.’<br />

A primary goal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IEEE</strong> is to ensure that the<br />

Institute Awards Program provides due recognition<br />

for superior achievement in the engineering pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

To that end, and in response to the desire <strong>of</strong> the<br />

membership, the Awards Board, and Board <strong>of</strong> Directors<br />

that the field <strong>of</strong> education be more broadly recognized,<br />

this award for graduate teaching was added<br />

to the Awards Program. Selection criteria include<br />

such contributions as curriculum development,<br />

authorship <strong>of</strong> course materials, involvement with students<br />

and faculty in advisory capacities, as well as<br />

‘attracting students to engineering and scientific<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essions, and preparing them for<br />

effective careers in engineering and the<br />

sciences.’<br />

Recipient selection is administered<br />

by the <strong>IEEE</strong> Awards Board through the<br />

Technical Field Awards Council. It is<br />

awarded to an individual only.<br />

In the evaluation process, the following<br />

criteria are considered: excellence in<br />

teaching graduate students, curriculum development<br />

with the inclusion <strong>of</strong> current research and<br />

development knowledge that reflects the state <strong>of</strong> the<br />

art in courses, authorship <strong>of</strong> course material for graduate<br />

students; and involvement with and direction <strong>of</strong><br />

students to prepare them for effective careers in engineering<br />

and the sciences, and the quality <strong>of</strong> the nomination.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award consists <strong>of</strong> a bronze medal, certificate<br />

and honorarium.<br />

Call for Nominations: SSCS Predoctoral Fellowships<br />

2007 – 2008<br />

Due Date is 1 May, 2007<br />

Nominations for the Society’s Predoctoral Fellowships<br />

in solid-state circuits are due on 1 May,<br />

2007 for the academic year 2007-2008. <strong>The</strong> oneyear<br />

awards will include a stipend <strong>of</strong> $15,000, tuition<br />

and fees up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> $8,000, and a grant <strong>of</strong><br />

$2,000 to the department in which the recipient is registered.<br />

A maximum <strong>of</strong> two awards will be made.<br />

Applicants must have completed at least one year<br />

<strong>of</strong> graduate study, be in a Ph.D. program in the area<br />

<strong>of</strong> solid-state circuits, and be a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>IEEE</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award will be made on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

record and promise, dissertation research program,<br />

and need.<br />

Applications should be in electronic format and<br />

must include the following items:<br />

A Short (one-page) Biography - including <strong>IEEE</strong><br />

membership number.<br />

Academic Records - including a copy <strong>of</strong> all relevant<br />

undergraduate and graduate transcripts.<br />

Graduate Study Plans - including a summary <strong>of</strong><br />

what has been completed and what is planned (about<br />

2 pages is appropriate), plus a list <strong>of</strong> any publications<br />

authored or co-authored. A copy <strong>of</strong> each publication<br />

is desirable. Work that must be done to complete the<br />

graduate program <strong>of</strong> study should be explained -why<br />

it is important, and what is novel about its<br />

approach -- as well as the importance <strong>of</strong> SSCS predoctoral<br />

fellowship support toward completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

doctoral degree.<br />

Letters <strong>of</strong> Recommendation - At least two letters<br />

<strong>of</strong> recommendation are required; one should be from<br />

the principal advisor. <strong>The</strong>se letters should address<br />

academic record, accomplishments and promise,<br />

graduate study research program, and need.<br />
