ABSTRACT
The role of the Russian Federation in the Caucasus should be studied in
two clearly different geographic realms: the North Caucasus, part of the
Federation, and the South Caucasus, made of three independent States
that were part of the Russian and Soviet empires for two centuries. In
the north of the mountain range, the two wars in Chechnya have evolved
to a struggle against a pan Caucasian terrorism of radical Islamic
ideology; while in the south the relations with Georgia, Armenia and
Azerbaijan have been conditioned by the Russian participation in the
“frozen conflicts” of the zone, which still have not been solved.
