ABSTRACT
The Caucasus is a territory that includes three independent states
(Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), with a ethnic diversity matchless
in any region of the world, and in which there is a concurrence of the
interest of diverse regional powers (Russia, Turkey, Iran), creating a
complex political, economic and, mainly, security panorama, as it was
evident during the short war between Russia and Georgia in
August 2008. The perpetuation of the so-called “frozen conflicts” and
the permanent tension in the region demand a special attention, due to
the destabilization that would represent a new armed conflict in an area
that is paramount for the European interests.
