Guy DarmetDirecteur Artistique / Artistic DirectorNé <strong>en</strong> 1947, Guy Darmet, lic<strong>en</strong>cié <strong>en</strong> droit et diplômé <strong>en</strong>gestion, acquiert une expéri<strong>en</strong>ce dans le marketing. De 1974à 1979, il est directeur <strong>de</strong> promotion d’un magazine régionaldont il supervise aussi <strong>la</strong> rubrique « spectacles ». Il écrit sur lecinéma, le théâtre et <strong>la</strong> danse et <strong>de</strong>vi<strong>en</strong>t parallèlem<strong>en</strong>t correspondantdu magazine national <strong>Danse</strong>. Son intérêt pour <strong>la</strong>danse vi<strong>en</strong>t sans doute du souv<strong>en</strong>ir d’une représ<strong>en</strong>tation <strong>de</strong>sBallets <strong>de</strong> Marquis <strong>de</strong> Cuevas avec Rosel<strong>la</strong> Hightower quandil était <strong>en</strong>fant. L’arrivée à <strong>Lyon</strong> <strong>de</strong> Vittorio Biagi à <strong>la</strong> tête duBallet <strong>de</strong> <strong>Lyon</strong> <strong>en</strong> 1969 sera égalem<strong>en</strong>t un catalyseur important.Ferv<strong>en</strong>t déf<strong>en</strong>seur <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> danse <strong>en</strong> <strong>France</strong>, supporterconvaincu du projet Maison <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong>, il <strong>en</strong> <strong>de</strong>vi<strong>en</strong>t toutnaturellem<strong>en</strong>t le directeur le 1er janvier 1980. Vingt-huit ansplus tard, avec ses 15 000 abonnés et 170 000 spectateurschaque saison, <strong>la</strong> Maison <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong>, lieu unique <strong>en</strong> <strong>France</strong>,est <strong>de</strong>v<strong>en</strong>ue une <strong>de</strong>s scènes <strong>de</strong> diffusion et <strong>de</strong> création chorégraphiquesles plus importantes au mon<strong>de</strong>. En 1984, il crée<strong>la</strong> Bi<strong>en</strong>nale <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong> dont il assume <strong>la</strong> direction artistique.Sa première édition suscite un grand intérêt. Guy Darmet<strong>de</strong>vi<strong>en</strong>t le conteur d’un festival <strong>de</strong>v<strong>en</strong>u l’un <strong>de</strong>s r<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>z-vousincontournables consacrés à <strong>la</strong> danse.Thématique et festive,<strong>la</strong> Bi<strong>en</strong>nale raconte <strong>de</strong> superbes histoires au public qui découvre,regar<strong>de</strong>, écoute, se passionne et participe. En 1996,s’inspirant du célèbre Carnaval <strong>de</strong> Rio, il fait défiler dans lesrues <strong>de</strong> <strong>Lyon</strong> plus <strong>de</strong> 2 000 danseurs amateurs et professionnels<strong>de</strong>vant 200 000 personnes. Cette initiative est un réelsuccès salué avec <strong>en</strong>thousiasme par le public et <strong>la</strong> presse nationaleet internationale. Depuis, Le Défilé est un événem<strong>en</strong>tatt<strong>en</strong>du à chaque Bi<strong>en</strong>nale. En 2004, il a regroupé 4 500participants et 250 000 spectateurs. Guy Darmet a <strong>la</strong>rgem<strong>en</strong>tcontribué et contribue toujours à ce que <strong>Lyon</strong> <strong>de</strong>vi<strong>en</strong>neune <strong>de</strong>s capitales <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> danse. Le magazine Télérama l’a élupersonnalité culturelle <strong>de</strong> l’année 1989 et on le retrouve dixans plus tard à <strong>la</strong> tête du même palmarès. En juillet 1999, onlui confie <strong>la</strong> direction artistique du 8e Grand Prix Eurovision<strong>de</strong>s Jeunes <strong>Danse</strong>urs. En novembre 2002, il récidive avec<strong>la</strong> retransmission <strong>en</strong> direct <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Maison <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong> d’unesoirée chorégraphique « Dance celebration » qui sera diffuséesur 17 chaînes <strong>de</strong> l’Eurovision. En 2003, il a été choisi par<strong>la</strong> fondation Rolex pour faire partie du programme « RolexM<strong>en</strong>tor and Protégé Initiative » aux côtés <strong>de</strong> Pina Bausch,Carlos Saura, Ariel Dorfman, Mira Naïr…. Guy Darmet a étépromu : Chevalier <strong>de</strong>s Arts et <strong>de</strong>s Lettres (1984), Chevalierdans l’Ordre National du Mérite (1992), Officier dans l’Ordre<strong>de</strong>s Arts et <strong>de</strong>s Lettres (1997), Chevalier <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Légion d’Honneur(1999). En 2005, il est fait Docteur Honoris Causa <strong>de</strong>l’Université du Quebec à Montréal.He was bornin <strong>Lyon</strong>, inAugust 1947. Aftergraduating in <strong>la</strong>w,he earned a businessadministration <strong>de</strong>gree andworked in marketing, which<strong>en</strong>abled him to build close and necessary ties betwe<strong>en</strong> thecultural and business communities. In 1980, hewas an eager promoter of choreography and steadfastlysupported the Maison <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong> project in <strong>Lyon</strong>, and quit<strong>en</strong>aturally became the v<strong>en</strong>ue’s director on 1 January 1980.This one-of-a-kind Fr<strong>en</strong>ch establishm<strong>en</strong>t has since becomeone of the world’s leading dance v<strong>en</strong>ues, with 15,000 subscribersand over 170,000 spectators each season. In 1984,he created the Bi<strong>en</strong>nale <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong> and became its artisticdirector. From its very first edition, the Bi<strong>en</strong>nale attractedsubstantial public interest. The festival drew an ever-expandingcircle of <strong>en</strong>thusiasts, becoming one of the most importantdance ev<strong>en</strong>ts anywhere. In 1996, as part of a communityscheme, he was inspired by the Rio Carnival to <strong>de</strong>vise theDéfilé, or para<strong>de</strong>, for the Bi<strong>en</strong>nale <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong>, with supportfrom the Ministry of Culture. The first Défilé brought together2,000 professional and amateur dancers, and 200,000spectators linedthe streets of <strong>Lyon</strong>. The Défilé now featuresa castof over 4,500 – a success unanimously acc<strong>la</strong>imed bythe national and international press. Thanks to Guy Darmet,<strong>Lyon</strong> has become a promin<strong>en</strong>t dance host. For his tirelessefforts, he has received numerous acco<strong>la</strong><strong>de</strong>s. These inclu<strong>de</strong>being voted Cultural Personality of the Year by Téléramamagazine in 1989 and 1999. In 1995, the Fr<strong>en</strong>ch governm<strong>en</strong>tappointed him to chair the committee that allocatesfunding to dance companies. He was the Artistic Director ofthe great Eurovision ev<strong>en</strong>t «Dance celebration», broadcastlive from the Maison <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>Danse</strong> on 27 November 2002. Andin 2003, the Rolex Foundation ma<strong>de</strong> him a member of theRolex M<strong>en</strong>tor and Protégé Initiative together with famousartists such as Pina Bausch, Carlos Saura, Ariel Dorfman andMira Naïr.
