Décidant de s’y consacrer entièrement, ildevient alors interprète du Groupe Nouvelle Aired’où est issue toute une génération de chorégraphesquébécois tels que Ginette Laurin, ÉdouardLock, Daniel Léveillé, etc.. Sa carrière de chorégraphecommence en 1978 avec la créationde Derrière la porte un mur. L’année suivante ilfonde sa compagnie Danse-Théâtre Paul-AndréFortier, rebaptisée Fortier Danse Création. Ilenchaîne les créations et progressivement, sesœuvres glissent «du narratif à l’abstrait» laissant«le champs libre à la multiplicité des interprétations,au jeu libre des sensations du spectateur».Artiste soliste d’exception Paul-André signeLes Males Heures (1989), premier volet d’unetrilogie qui comprend également La Tentation dela transparence (1991) et Bras de Plomb (1993).Ces deux derniers solos ont été réalisés avec laparticipation de l’artiste visuelle Betty Goodwin.Ces trois solos sont devenus des pièces majeuresdans la carrière du chorégraphe.Revenu à la composition de groupe, il créeensuite plusieurs pièces dont Risque, en 2003,une création pour six jeunes danseurs, soutenantainsi la relève d’interprètes. Paul-André Fortierest à présent chorégraphe en résidence àla Cinquième Salle de la Place des Arts deMontréal.Solo 30x30 /Trente Minutes- Trente Jours (2006)création « in situ » de Paul-André Fortier30x30 est un événement solo créé et interprétépar Paul-André Fortier. Conçu comme uneperformance « in situ » de 30 minutes, le solosera présenté à l’extérieur dans le même lieu,tous les jours à la même heure pendant 30 jours.L’interprétation variera d’une journée à l’autreen fonction de la température, des spectateurset des interactions avec l’environnement et avecle public. Le lieu de présentation sera inhabituelpour un spectacle, passant, intégré dans la villeet ses activités permettant une rencontre privilégiéeentre l’artiste, l’environnement et le public.Paul-André FortierIn 1973, when Paul-André Fortier discovereddance, he was a teacher of literature andtheatre. He decided to dedicate himself tothe discipline, becoming a performer withGroupe Nouvelle Aire, which produced a wholegeneration of Quebec choreographers suchas Ginette Laurin, Édouard Lock and DanielLéveillé. His career as a choreographer beganin 1978 with “Derrière la porte un mur“. Thefollowing year he founded his own company,Danse-Théâtre Paul-André Fortier, later retitledFortier Danse-Création. He wrote a string ofpieces, which gradually shifted from narrativeto abstract, “leaving the way open for multipleinterpretations and to play freely with the spectator’ssensations”. An outstanding solo artist,Paul-André created “Les Males Heures“ (1989),the first part of a trilogy that also includes “LaTentation de la transparence“ (1991) and “Brasde Plomb“(1993); the latter two solos featuredvisual artist Betty Goodwin. This trilogy becamethe centrepiece of the choreographer’s career.Returning to group compositions, he createdseveral pieces including “Risque“ (2003), a workfor six young dancers – and thus helped usherthrough a new wave of performers. Paul-AndréFortier is currently resident choreographer at LaCinquième Salle in La Place des Arts, Montreal.Solo 30x30 – Thirty Minutes,Thirty Days (2006)Performed In Situ by Paul-André Fortier30x30 is a solo event devised and performedby Paul-André Fortier. Conceived as an “insitu” performance lasting 30 minutes, it will bestaged outside in the same place, every day atthe same time, for 30 days. The performancewill vary daily according to the temperature,the spectators and Fortier’s interactions withhis surroundings and the audience. It will be anunusual location for a show: open to passers-byand integrated with the city and its activities,allowing a special encounter between artist,environment and public.85
