The real novelty about this initiative is that for the first time sixteen big Italian F&V companies have joined forces in order to develop a promotional project in a way that is organized and systematic. The management of the initiative has been entrusted to the CSO (Centro Servizi Ortofutticoli - Centre for F&V services) of Ferrara, which is thus destined to play an increasingly pivotal role in the national fruit and vegetable system As Mario Tamanti, managing director of the Cso, has said, “the great strength of this initiative lies in the way in which it has united the efforts of numerous Italian companies which between them represent 12 thousand agricultural concerns. Now more than ever it is important that fruit and vegetables reposition themselves in the minds of consumers, so that they are no longer considered superfluous or replaceable, but are appreciated for their natural qualities and the pleasure they can afford”. Declining consumption is indeed a phenomenon that has for some time now reached alarming proportions. At the news conference, Cso chairman Paolo Bruni po inted out that “since 2000, consumption of fruit has fallen by 500 thousand tons and that of vegetables by al most 700 thousand tons. And if we also consider that F&V now represents only 3% of total household expenditure, and that the Italian family spends on average only 1.5 euros per day on F&V, the situation appears even more worrying”. The promotional activity envisaged by the project will take the form of advertisements in the major newspapers and television programmes which will focus on the work of the producers. The print campaign, which will be carried out in two periods corresponding to the main production seasons, aims at achieving 40 million consumer contacts. La regia dell’iniziativa è affidata al Cso (Centro servizi ortofrutticoli) di Ferrara che così gioca sempre di più un ruolo di pivot per il sistema ortofrutticolo nazionale. Come ha dichiarato Mario Tamanti, consigliere delegato Cso, «la massima valenza dell’iniziativa sta nel fatto che si siano unite le forze di numerose imprese italiane al cui interno operano 12mila aziende agricole. La frutta e la verdura hanno oggi più che mai la necessità di riposizionarsi nella mente dei consumatori, che non dovranno più considerarle un prodotto sostituibile o banale ma dovranno sempre più apprezzarne i requisiti e la naturale piacevolezza». Il calo dei consumi è, in effetti, un fenomeno da tempo più che allarmante. «In Italia dal 2000 ad oggi – ha sottolineato durante la conferenza stampa il presidente del Cso Paolo Bruni – si sono consumate 500mila tonnellate in meno di frutta e quasi 700mila in meno di ortaggi. Se poi pensiamo che l’acquisto di ortofrutta rappresenta oggi appena il 3% della spesa totale e che ogni famiglia italiana spende in media, per frutta e verdura, solo 1,5 euro al giorno il dato si fa ancora più preoccu - pante». L’attività promozionale consisterà in comunicazioni pubblicitarie su grandi quotidiani e trasmissioni televisive improntate sull’attività dei produttori. Per la campagna di stampa, che sarà effettuata in due periodi corrispondenti alle principali stagionalità, si prevedono non meno di 40 milioni di contatti.
