the big brand names, and the demand for locally
farmed foodstuffs are gaining greater momentum
now». No longer, then, is the private-label item simply
a way to use its cheaper prices as its main sales pitch
to win the custom, and part of the budgets, of the
country’s households. Now that the big chains stock a
greater, in-depth assortment of own-house labelled
items, they are in a better position to meet the
demands of discerning shoppers. So, if we breakdown
the growth figures by quality level/price of the various
lines of private-label items, we find that next to the
9.8% rise in the first-price range, which is the cheapest
category, is the even more spectacular 23.5% performance
of the premium-price items of higher quality.
A good 2011 showing, with a 9.1% rise in sales, was
also posted by organics, always one of the mainstays of
those chains that focus more on their own-label sector.
«We’ve got to start thinking in terms of private-label
consumers – concluded Cristini. – They are no longer
a segment of cheap-price only. Indeed, our surveys
indicate that the persons spending more are shoppers
with at least a mid-to-high educational level and
a similar socio-economic standing. These consumers
represent, of course, the larger households of 4-5
members. They are more inclined to have bigger
shopping bills and most reside in the North, more
specifically in the north-western regions, of the country.
Implicit here is the fact that sales under private
labels in the regions of the South are still lower than
average».
l’attenzione all’ambiente e tutti i temi correlati, l’innovazione
+23,5% a valore.
media».
