And that is the secret of Sprouts Farmers Market, one of the hottest chains on the scene, which from its birth place in one of the unlikeliest of places for a F&V specialist, Phoenix (Arizona), is extending its operations in Colorado, Texas and California. Sprouts was founded by a family of entrepreneurs from San Diego, the heirs of Henry Boney, their grandfather, who, beginning with the classic fruit stall in 1943, went on to create a series of small chains like Boney’s, Bradshaw’s, and Superama which he sold it in 1956, to then invent the Speedee Mart chain of C- Stores that was bought by 7-Eleven. In 1976, the Boney family launched Windmill Farms which specialized in health food, only to sell it in order to finance Henry’s Marketplace (1997), which in its turn was sold to Wild Oats. Finally, in 2002, Sprouts Farmers Market was born, a chain specializing in fresh produce, which today boasts more than 100 stores and annual sales of nearly $ 1.5 billion. Innovation in product assortment Sprouts is a hybrid. It remains open from 7 am to 11 pm. It is based on a 3-4 thousand square meters format designed by the Los Angeles architectural firm Nadel in which there is space for about 40 thousand products, above all fresh produce, and 80-90 staff. Innovazione nell’assortimento Sprouts è un ibrido. Resta aperto dalle 7 del mattino alle 11 di sera. È basato su un format, disegnato dallo studio Nadel di Los Angeles, di 3-4mila mq in cui trovano spazio circa 40mila referenze, soprattutto fresche o freschissime, gestite da 80-90 addetti.
