Background about NAFRI, NUoL and SNVNAFRIThe National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute of Laos was established in 1999 in order to consolidate agricultureand forestry research activities within the country and develop a coordinated National Agriculture and Forestry ResearchSystem.NAFRI aims to contribute to the goals of the Government of Laos by focusing on adaptive research to overcome specificproblems limiting production and causing degradation of natural resources. NAFRI seeks to do this by carrying out demanddrivenresearch that supports local peoples’ active involvement in their own development.NAFRI focuses primarily on adaptive research in order to provide technical options, recommendations and results to supportagriculture, forestry and fisheries development and strategic formulation of policies and programmes in accordance with thegovernment policy.NAFRI is comprised of seven discipline specific research Centres and one regional research Centre. These include:1. Agriculture Research Centre2. Coffee Research Centre3. Forest Research Centre4. Horticulture Research Centre5. Livestock Research Centre6. Living Aquatic Resources Research Centre7. Soil Science and Land Classification Centre8. Northern Agriculture and Forestry Research CentreKey priority research areas include:• Upland Research: focused on working with upland farmers to increase farm-level productivity and incomes to alleviatepoverty as well as ensure sustainable management of the diversity found in the uplands.• Forestry and natural resource management including land, soil and water management, conservation, agroforestry, forestryecology and management and community-based forest management• Rice Research: focused on developing a coherent national rice research programme.• Aquatic resources including: aquaculture and wetland management• Livestock production including: breeding and production improvement, animal nutrition, animal health and animalhusbandry• Cross-cutting services including: genetic resource management and agriculture biodiversity, plant protection, postharvest processing, farming systems research, socio economics, GIS, and information management, ICT and improvingdissemination and communication of research results.• Institutional Development at NAFRI including: human resources capacity development, human resources managementand development of equipment, facilities and supplies for research centers.For more information contactNational Agriculture and Forestry Research InstituteP.O.
